Yeah, the same principle applies for 2D films that are converted to 3D in my opinion.
Fixed these for you.

At the theater I go to it's only $2.50 extra for 3D.

Now come on it's not an opinion that a studio makes a 3D conversion of a purely 2D film for anything other than money. You're smarter than that so don't be so naive.

The best theater 3D I've seen still is Hugo, Avatar, and Life of Pi. Nothing ever really came close to these.

The average seems to be about $4-5 especially in the larger cities. It's even higher if it's an IMAX screening.

Exactly, because they were shot with 3D equipment.

The entire point of making 99% of movies is to make money though, are you going to boycott movies?

Of course not, but if a director shoots a film entirely with 2D cameras then it deserves to be seen in 2D. In this case 3D simply becomes a gimmick so you can buy the members of the board of the studio a new Mercedes.

He beats this dead horse everytime a conversion is announced. Some conversions like Titanic to name one, is far better than half the native 3D movies made. There are plenty others and I'm not going to rehash those titles yet again.

Glad this debate got started, based off what steve_dave said, I'm definitely checking it out in 3D now

The Man Who Wasn't There, Sin City and others were shot in color, but then altered to be black & white. Isn't that the same principle?

No, because the director intentionally made those changes.

Okay, so was George Miller coerced to put this out in 3D? If it's like Godzilla, where the DP and/or director is opposed to it being 3D, then I get your POV.

And the decision for a 3D conversion is somehow unintentional? It's the same thing.

Look at what Guillermo del Toro said about the conversion of Pacific Rim

Quote:
“What happened was, in the weeks and months following Comic-Con, what I asked from the studio was to agree to four points that I wanted to do,” he says. “The more the ILM shots arrived, the more I realized that there were only a few shots that would miniaturize. I asked the studio, number one, that we would not hyper-stereo-lize the thing. That we would not force 3D on the beauty shots. That we would keep the giant dimensions. They agreed. Number two, they agreed to something very unusual. Normally a conversion takes a few weeks. I asked to start it immediately so we could take the full 40 weeks to do the conversion. As an example, ‘Titanic’ took about 50 weeks to convert. The final thing that I asked that they agreed to, which was amazing, was that I asked them to give me an extra budget, which is considerable, to actually have ILM composite the shots that are CG native 3D. We’re not giving elements. ILM is giving the composite in 3D from the get-go. That’s a huge, huge element. Now I’m going to be involved in supervising it. What can I tell you? I changed my mind. I’m not running for office. I can do a Romney"
Quote:
"The scale is mythical, a disregard for human scale, and it's a huge change to see it in 3D. You have to see it on the most obscenely large screen. I wanted to make this movie as a case for post-conversion of 3D can be great."

I don't know if he was or not, but it has happened many times before.

I can't remember the last time a summer blockbuster was reviewed this well. Not since Toy Story 3.
