Hmmm, so I didn't realize this until now, but this is actually playing at one of the theaters near me that gets a lot of the foreign/indie/arthouse films. They usually get the GKIDS stuff (Only Yesterday is currently playing there as well), but this is the first time I noticed them getting a Funimation release there.

As much as I'd like to see it on the big screen though, I'll probably end up passing on it, considering I just bought the Japanese BD, which arrived last week.

Reception doesn't seem to be quite up to the level of Wolf Children, but I'll see for myself very soon.

Saw that this past Friday There's seems to be audio issues but I think it was probably the theater (Century theater). The ending felt a little rushed... But still a great movie.

And you're right I think Wolf Children is still better.

Hosoda rankings
1. Summer Wars
2. Wolf Children
3. The Boy and the Beast
4. TGWLTT
5. Digimon

Well, if we're doing this :

1. Wolf Children
2. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
3. One Piece The Movie: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island
4. Summer Wars

It's been a little while since I've seen the two Digimon Adventure shorts, though I'm hoping to snag the Japanese BD soon (now that they've broken down the boxset into individual releases).

I saw it yesterday and there was a few audio issues...subtitles displayed with no sound in a few instances most notably.

As for my Hosoda movie ranking:
1. Summer Wars
2. The Boy and the Beast
3. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
4. The Wolf Children

Wolf Children is a masterpiece.

Summer Wars has some interesting things in it but the pacing is very sluggish.

I saw this a week ago, and I thought it was great. My one problem is I think it could have toned down a bit on some of the exposition.

Here is how I would rank his films

Wolf Children
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
The Boy and the Beast
Summer Wars

I've only seen the American edit of the Digimon Movie. While I still love it, I understand it's pretty butchered.

I just got back in from seeing this. I drove almost four hours to Durham, NC because South Carolina is a black hole for these films and the trip was well worth it in every single way. This is my new favorite from Hosoda. I have yet to see The Girl Who Leapt Through Time because the Blu from Bandai is out of print and I am hoping Funimation will fix that this year! However, The Boy and the Beast is spectacular in every way. I cried. I will be doing a full review on my Blog for this one because after driving like that to see it it is worthy of the honor. The first film of 2016, for us at least because I know it is a 2015 release in Japan, to warrant it from me.

Then again, Funi can't go around giving the impression to their core audience (mouth-breathing dub "fans") that the films they distribute are made by Japanese people and not them, right?

What are you even talking about? They probably don't have the rights/clearance to the Japanese commentaries. The cover even acknowledge the Japanese creator.

This is valid for all anime home video releases by anyone who is not Discotek Media or GKids. The only other anime I've seen with a decent amount of extras on their BD releases are Redline, Paprika, and Tekkonkinkreet. Again, not by either Funi, Sentai, Aniplex, etc.

Yeah, Japanese commentaries even though they pop up every once in a while are usually a massive pain to acquire. Even Aniplex USA couldn't clear them post Bakemonogatari.

As for what he's talking about, he's probably referring to how FUNi will replace JP staff with their own in the credits much of the time, and also will make misleading titles for some of their extras such as "The Making of Attack on Titan" which was entirely about the dub, not the Japanese. Though the Japanese releases did not have such a feature (what FUNi got for JP extras was all the JP release had, they even apparently got all the booklet content for the LE's).

Keep in mind not all anime releases in Japan are loaded with on-disc extras (it's actually rather rare), and even though they have a preference for booklets, some releases don't have them at all. I recommend looking at the official site for shows, or using AllCinema (a database for Japanese Blu-ray/DVD releases in general) sometime. Many times what you see on our releases for on-disc extras is literally all the Japanese release had. It's the booklet content that these days we generally fail to get (unless the show is licensed by Sentai, then on-disc is usually a worry).

Hmm to get this now or wait for the re branded version. Oddly enough this is a Universal tactic it appears. Uni is really good about releasing something and then doing it over and over only with different slipcovers. I my 20 boxes of slipcovers can attest to that.

The collectors edition of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time will probably have a slipcase because it will have 52 page artbook/interview and such.

I've seen some random FUNI-bashing that doesn't make sense in my time, but this ridiculous nonsense takes the cake.

It's funny, because in the early days of ADV, some people actually thought that they made Evangelion and such. People came to the owner guy's house and asked him to make more.
