I'd say it's 50/50 for me. I don't have a collection of thousands, or even hundreds of BD. I only buy ones that are favorites and will get repeated viewings. I do like watching new movies but it seems they're usually 2/4 stars. Rarely do I see a 4/4 star movie anymore. The best new movie I've seen in a while would be Interstellar which I'd rate 3/4.

Once your library gets larger I have found that watching movies you've seen becomes more of the "percentage" of watched films. Thats because it can be a long time between views and in some cases your favs can feel fresh again.
The other issue for me is that there havent been a ton of new releases I really care to see. Just a handful here an there. So, Im probably 75% already seen vs 25% new stuff/never seen older films. ** I assume that the "new/never seen" category also includes older films that you've never watched. ![]() |

I think it happens to us all as we get older. We all have our era of entertainment that we fall in love with, and decide we want to live in. I remember when I was young, my dad used to say "I'm stuck in the 60's." I never understood it then. I always thought theres so much more than just the 60s. But as I get older, I now understand. You start to realize that things were better back when you were younger. And it's not just nostalgia. I would say it applies to music more than anything else. Since that gets worse and worse as time goes on. But it also applies to TV and movies.

I'm turning 35 this year. It's about five years ago I first started noticing how certain friends becoming a non-twenty-something suddenly got stuck in this "Everything was better when we were younger."-modus. And I can't stand it. It's not right. In my experience they just stop being open to the unknown and hold on to the familiar. On everything, music, movies, graphic novels, comedians, ... Everything is not as good as it was in their days. They shut out half of the newer things automatically.
And then I have friends that are more like myself. I discover great music of new bands daily, as a matter of speaking. The newest sound that's hot right now doesn't bother me, I'm able to enjoy it as much as my so-called 90s classics or anything before. There's sh*tty stuff, great stuff and anything between... Just like was the case with any decade. I'm open for everything. And it's the same for movies. I sure hope that never changes. Saw the same thing happening with my parents. Weird thing is, after fifteen years being stubborn, they are surprisingly open again to everything new. I believe the grandchildren have something to do with that. They're back, lol. And I'm glad they've let go. |

Really don't think much of new/old films/music, just depends on your preferences.
I could be watching Chaplin's Modern Times, and later on maybe Ghostbusters 2016.. Who knows. At some point... Nostalgia does plays a big part, but not everytime. |

I watch older and new movies all the time, and I love both. I recently watched In Cold Blood from 1967 for the first time, and I couldn't believe how great it was. The 70s is my favorite decade of all time for movies.

I mix it up but I would have to say that I tend to return to the older films (many made before I was even born) for repeated viewings more often than the more recent films. Films featuring performers like Bogart (i.e. Casablanca, The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon, etc.) or John Wayne (i.e. The Searchers, Rio Bravo, Red River, etc.), or classics like Mrs. Miniver, The Best Years of Our Lives, or Twelve O'clock High seem to have more staying power after repeated viewings than the more recent films made.

I've been seeking out films that I had seen as a teenager that were older at the time and buying them now. It's been great because not only am I watching them in better quality but some are coming with a lot of supplements like commentaries, which gives me insight and information that I find interesting and adds to the replay value. Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, The Conversation, Midnight Express, The French Connection among others are what I have within the last few weeks and totally agree with the poster above's last sentence.

Overall I probably watch more "new to me" movies than I do with movies I've already seen. Sometimes the "new to me" movie will be a brand new one sometimes a classic from the 70's. This time of year though is basically always new movies for me. I'm trying to watch as many Oscar nominated movies as I can before the Oscars so much of my free movie time is for new stuff.

There are certain favorites that I watch at least once a year and I'm not even counting holiday movies. Some are classics, some are just personal favorites. Pulp Fiction, The Godfather, Star Wars original trilogy, Young Guns II (a crime that it still isn't on Blu), one of the Rambo movies, a couple of Batman movies (Burton and/or Nolan), etc. However I love the thrill of a movie I haven't seen before.

I mostly watch movies that are new to me. Sometimes I rewatch stuff too, but then it's pretty much always with someone else.

Lately I'm rewatching a lot more than I used to. I get so comfortable with what I've already seen that I dont want to deal with a possible disappointment coming from a first time watch. So yeah I would rather rewatch at least in the meantime.

I go through phases throughout the year, right now I'm watching mostly new stuff to catch up on the awards season nominees. But usually it's a mix that leans towards rewatches. New movies are plenty good but more often than not, old is gold.

I'm definitely in the "watch and discover new things in the films I already love" kind of camp. Or the "watch new films that I'm fairly certain I'll like" camp.
While I'm always open to new films, and indeed have several favorites from the past 15 years or so, the more I see of modern films (in general), the more I appreciate the truly great films of the past! ![]() Last edited by Popcorn_Bliss; 02-17-2017 at 05:16 PM. |

Yes. Becoming an expert in a certain film is always fun. I even listen to fan commentary from other movie buffs. Sometimes I learn more from fan commentary, than actual cast and crew commentary.
