Is there any hard information about *when* the 1TB unit is scheduled to arrive?

I'm sure Tech sites will do a teardown as soon as they're available to see what's changed.

That might be our first real clue to Sony's future intentions...

Nope just FCC filings, specifics of which (User Manual, Internal and External Photos) are confidential until November 28th 2015. So maybe expect to see something closer to the PS4s 2nd Birthday.

As expected doesn't seem to be anything more than a new hdd, 8% lighter and 10% less power consumption.

Japan is also getting a new 500 gb model in black and white with the hdd cover being matte same as the rest of the shell instead of gloss as it is now

I guess we won't see a 4K slim update before E3 2016 then.

I'm searching on 'PS4 CUH-1200', maybe more details will come to light later.

Like an HDMI controller update...

After picking up the new Dragon Age game at GameStop for $25 and having nowhere to install it (requires 45GB before patch), I've decided to throw in my PS4/4K towel.

Went and bought a 2TB drive for $150 so I can upgraded my launch PS4 (so I'm keeping it now no matter what).

I'll take the 500GB out of the PS4 and likewise use that to upgrade my PS3.

Sony seems to be very complacent at this point and doesn't see the need for any real updating.

From the looks of it, they will sell the already meager 1TB unit for a premium ($450+) and keep the tweaked 500GB in the entry slot ($400).

With no statement on UHD support, I've decided to move on and not worry about it.

Unboxing the new CUH-1200 500GB Matte PS4s. If you’re wondering, when he jokes about the “yellow light of death,” he’s referring to the yellow-ish light in his room, and not to the PS4 itself.

These seem to be the "basic" model now, the power and eject buttons are now mechanical (cheaper, see video) then the previous models electrostatic buttons.

The position of the ports in the back has changed. The number of screws hidden by the warranty voiding seal have also been reduced from four to two.

There’s an obvious difference if you remove the HDD bay cover. The size of the board is smaller.

The 1tb model still uses the old more expensive hardware for some reason where as the new model uses cheaper second generation hardware inside as well as outside, the power and eject buttons being mechanical now instead of electrostatic as before.

So you could say Sony are adopting a "Premium" and "Basic" model pricing strategy.

As for 4k and the PS4 I don't see why anyone would have expected any kind of announcement on that. If it ever comes at all it definitely wouldn't be this early, especially when the format hasn't even launched yet.

I wasn't expecting Sony to use the term 'UHD support' per say, but these new units have been rumored since the begin of the year.

If the recent press release had said anything (at all) about 4K or next-gen HDMI, then I would have held off upgrading my launch unit.

PlayStation was 'in at the ground floor' for DVD and BD, so I thought there was a chance this might be a priority for Sony.

It's totally cool though, by saying nothing they basically answered my questions.

The market with which BD entered had competition back in 06. I see none of that here with 4K. There really isn't any reason I can think of for Sony to push 4K disc playback other then the already established install base maybe which would nudge disc sales a bit.

This time round there is also no pressure for people to jump resolution displays. 1080 has achieved mainstream awhile ago so now it would be like trying to convince people all over again why their current BD collection & HT gear needs an upgrade. Something a lot harder to do with comparisons & current price trends on the latest gear.

Id love for my PS4 to be able to playback the new UHD discs but that's not what I & many others bought the console for.

Alot of people are starting to wonder if the UHD format is launching this year or not.

It's starting to feel like it's slipping into next year, like alot of these VR products that get talked about but don't have any launch dates.

As far as Sony goes, maybe they have a plan to get UHD working on standard PS4 hardware eventually.

Because there's absolutely no point in making games run at that UHD resolution. It would take a ridiculous amount of processing power.

The Japanese blog Pocket News has done a tear down of the new model, giving us a nice overview of the differences with the older CUH-1100 series model. Here are the most relevant points:
  • The plastic and metal parts of the HDD bay cover have undergone various changes, including the slits for air intake.
  • Under the secondary cover, the Blu-Ray LSI controller is hand soldered to the 12V outlet of the power supply, while the wireless antenna is on the back. The cover is there to avoid accidental contact with the 12V outlet when removing the hard disk drive.
  • The HDD is a 7mm thick HGST Travelstar Z5K500.
  • The position of the Blu-Ray drive, power source and cooling units are unchanged, but the build of the Blu-Ray drive has been simplfied.
  • The power supply’s model number is ADP-200ER, and it weighs 364 g; It’s 80 g lighter than the ADP-240CR included in the CUH-1100.
  • Output voltage is +12 v at 1.5 A, , +4.8V at 16A.
  • The GDDR5 RAM is the K4G80325FB-HC03 that Samsung has started mass producing in January. Before there were 16 memory modules, now there are only 8 with twice the capacity each.
  • The motherboard is shorter by 20 mm from top to bottom and 40 mm sideways.
  • The size of the CXD90037G APU (19 mm) has not been changed. The 28 nm manufacturing process is also the same. The CUH-1100’s APU had the model number CXD90026AG
  • The secondary chip is the same model number CXD90036G, as the CUH-1100, like the SDRAM module connected to it, numbered K4B2G1646Q-BCMA.
  • The HDMI transmitter is a Panasonic MN864729.
  • The system boot LSI controller has also been changed to JP 2015-049675, while the LSI system controller is now A00-C0L2.
  • There’s no more Blu-Ray LSI controller on the motherboard.
  • The cooling system has been changed in the metal frame’s geometry, even if the fan is the same model number KSB0912HE as before. The number of blades and ratings are also the same.
  • The metallic shield for the heat sink has been changed from aluminum to steel.
  • The heat sink lost the heat pipe crossing the aluminum fins from the base plate, and is now integrated in the plate itself.

loads of pictures here.

Can't find any info on the Panasonic MN864729. Anyone know if it's hdcp 2.2 compliant?

You can't find the chip from the original model either. It's not listed publicly, they're most likely custom chips, what exactly makes them custom is anyone's guess.

Another one of Jeffs posts

New BD drive.
New 8Gb GDDR5 chips (Samsung K4G80325FB-HC03) more power efficient (half the chips and shorter traces)
New main board SAC-001 replaced SAB-001 and has 60mm less width.
The APU CXD90037G remains the same part number but it could be a AMD version @ 28nm but using Global foundries and their process which is slightly more space and power efficient..

Following chips existed at previous models are now missing:
- Fujitsu USB 3.0-SATA bridge => moved into Southbridge
- Marvell Ethernet LSI => in the HDMI chip or southbridge
- Genesys Logic USB 3.0 hub controller LSI => moved into southbridge

The secondary processor CXD90036G (Southbridge) now has direct connection to all of them

HDMI transmitter is MN864729 by Panasonic. Again this chip is not listed in the Panasonic site but it's larger with many more pins. One of the features the previous chip didn't have which is supposed to be part of a HDMI chip is the Ethernet LAN pin where the internet can be accessed through the HDMI cable from another device in the chain from STB to optionally a Connected Receiver then to a Connected Smart TV. I suspect this chip has it and with HDMI 2.0 it needs an internet connection to firmware update the HDCP scheme which it probably now has internally to Southbridge or via the HDMI Ethernet pin which is also connected to Southbridge in some way. The Ethernet LSI may be part of the Panasonic HDMI chip or it could be in Southbridge.

The 4 small rectanular parts between the HDMI port and the HDMI chip are optoisolators which could be to protect against transients or to isolate for direct DC power supply provided by or for external devices. It could provide power for head mounted glasses connected to the HDMI port.

Previous PS4 HDMI chip below and the optoisolators are also there too.

I'm no expert but I don't think Rigby is on the right track re: the Ethernet pin on the HDMI chip. He's right that the Ethernet passthrough been a feature of HDMI for a good few years (it's just that no-one uses it) but it's not like the chip itself would be connecting to the internet to get its firmware updated because it doesn't have the protocols for that, surely? That stuff comes from higher up in the chain and whether the architecture is open-ended enough to allow the HDMI firmware to be updated, like the back door that Sony seemingly left themselves for their 2013 4K TVs to allow the 1.4 chips to be updated to the 2.0 lite spec (or perhaps that was left open by Silicon Image, I don't know), and they were updated by a regular firmware download into the TV which then installed itself accordingly. So I wouldn't read too much into the internet pin.
