I was interested in this until I saw James Franco was the star.

This could be absolutely brilliant. That teaser's not long enough to get a true feel of what's to come probably. But that lowdown,70's Times Square vibe is definately there. This could be the nearest we are going to get to wallow in prime 42nd Street sleaze. The Deuce has been faithfully re-created using CGI apparently. I,for one, cannot wait...!

One thing about Franco has me worried, but it is a bit of a spoiler.

I've been careful to limit James Franco projects despite his Samuel L. Jackson-like need to build IMDB numbers. That being said, he looks quite right for this. And I'm extremely excited about Maggie Gyllenhaal. This looks like her wheelhouse.

Mostly, I'm excited to see HBO replace the dashed hopes I had for Vinyl with a better period piece in NYC. I think Simon, Pelecanos & Co. will do the job.

Caught this last night and color me intrigued. The 1971 New York setting looks terrific and the numerous characters are wonderfully acted. To anybody dismissing this because of James Franco, that's your right of course, but he gives an excellent dramatic performance and I would urge anyone boycotting this because of him to at least give the pilot episode a viewing and the series a chance. I found one of the most interesting characters to be Abby, an intelligent NYU student I fear is about to make some questionable decisions... she's played by Margarita Levieva, who I was pretty shocked to discover is in reality almost 40 years old as she's playing a 20-year-old college student, and very convincingly looks that age (those are some impressive genes)!

As is so often the case with a New York setting, the city itself is a character here. The replicating of a Times Square that doesn't even exist anymore is certainly
impressive, and I loved the marquee's advertising The Bird With The Crystal Plummage, Mondo Trasho, The Conformist and The Wizard Of Gore, among others (not to mention The Omega Man film posters prominent in one shot).

Might try to catch the 1st episode this weekend.

Slight tangent: Speaking of period marquees, I just watched HARDCORE from 1978, and Star Wars pops up throughout that film: the missing daughter has a SW calendar in her room; George C Scott's hotel room looks out at Mann's Chinese theater with SW plastered on the side; and a club has 2 performers sporting lightsabers (and little else). Funny how period snapshots can juxtapose elements that seem odd in retrospect.

James Franco is becoming typecast. Not good for him. He also has 14 films in process, which means I can't see 14 movies.

Recently caught up with all five episodes of The Deuce & find the series extremely compelling. I'm a huge fan of any & all HBO series I've seen, and this is no exception. Superb.

The 1971 NYC setting is fantastic; they really pulled out all of the stops to recreate this era & specific place. The clothing, hairstyles, frequency of smoking, cars, stores/shops, etc. were straight out of this time period. I agree that the setting & era is another character in the story. The marquees with the early 1970's film "The Conformist" and "The Bird with Crystal Plumage" (a film I never heard about until recently) were great, as well as the two "The Omega Man" posters in another scene.

Also cool was in episode 5, when the college kids were trying to decide whether to go see "Straw Dogs" or "Play Misty For Me", both 1971 films.

Going along with this, I'm a huge fan of 1970's films - especially films set in NYC - and, this series had elements of: Mean Streets; Taxi Driver; Born to Win; Midnight Cowboy (late 1960's, but still the same era); The French Connection; Fingers; etc.

The same crowd(s) meeting in the same diner for breakfast each morning was a nice touch, and definitely reminded me of similar scenes in the great Al Pacino drama, Panic in Needle Park.

The scenes with the LE officers being told to just "let things go" in the area between certain blocks felt true to life. Also appreciated the scenes with the occasional "rousting", which was more of a formality and "just for show" than anything else, since everyone knew the women would be back on the streets not long after.

Maggie Gylenhall is sublime on this show; excellent acting on her part, and I also see that she's one of the show's producers.
[Show spoiler]My favorite scene was after she got beaten up & the pimp was trying to convince her to work for him. She was crying at first, but then got angry with him & walked away. Great stuff here; I can easily see her winning (or at least being nominated for) an award re: this series.

JF did a convincing job playing two roles here as twin brothers. The personalities of each are slightly different, which I'm sure was difficult to pull off well - but, was well-done here.

Simon has said that the next season will take a time jump and take place in the late 70's and that some of the cast won't be back. He hopes to have a third season set in the mid 80s.
