Yes, the 3D trailer was really solid.

My wife and I saw this in IMAX (real one) last night.
it was spectacularly shot, a visually stimulating visceral film. Touching and heroic. Suspenseful. Loved it.

Go see it on the big screen.

Completely agree with this. It was a gripping, gruelling true story that nailed the beauty and the danger of mountaineering. It's the most realistic film of this kind I've seen. It won't be for everyone--I did say gruelling--but it's the closest you'll ever get to ascending Everest without doing it yourself.

The aerial shots were stunning, but some of the most powerful 3D moments for me were the eerie, low-angled shots looking out from the camps, especially in half-light. The sense of stillness and isolation was palpable. I felt like I was there, a part of the expedition. And when the storm hit, the scale of doom was all-encompassing. 3D, together with the roaring sound FX, made it a scary experience.

Can't wait to buy this on blu-ray.

in 12-channel IMAX-laser sound the

[Show spoiler]approaching storm as it hits the side of the mountain and travels up - every hair on my neck stood straight up - the soundmix is colossal

and yes the 3D was very effective.

my only complaint of the movie was that I thought the first 45 minutes while necessary to establish the characters and their stories, the pacing was a bit lethargic

I concur with both of these. I had to drive an hour to go see this in Imax, but it was well worth it. Top notch 3D thru and thru. This is surely a day 1 buy on 3D Blu when it comes out.

Thanks for the reviews.

Would you guys/gals say the 3D is strong like it was in the trailer? Or does it tone down to medium 3D during the dialog shots? The trailer's 3D was impressive. I might consider this next weekend.

The 3D is strong especially in the visuals of the mountains and landscapes. Since most of the dialog is at night or indoors (tents) and is fairly close up,it limits the use of 3D. So in a sense, yes the 3D does feel kind of medium but is more of a medium strong 3D.

Everest (2015) 3D

Domestic Total as of Sep. 20, 2015: $7,222,035
Distributor: Universal Release Date: September 18, 2015
Genre: Thriller Runtime: 2 hrs. 1 min.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 Production Budget: $55 million
Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $7,222,035 20.0%
+ Foreign: $28,877,052 80.0%
= Worldwide: $36,099,087

For only a few theater showings during Friday, Sat, Sunday in the US and not a wide release, $7.2 million is a nice take for Everest 3D considering this was available only in 3D screens of Imax or XD from what I can see.

I'm not a 3D guy. I actually can't stand it. If I have the option, I won't pay to watch a film in 3D. But I must admit, even I was impressed by the depth and use of the 3D in this film.

I didn't see any of the trailers in 3D, so I can't compare. But the overall 3D in the movie was top tier, very immersive. The vertiginous shots rightly made me squirm (never did like heights), and there were some awesome panoramic shots of the approaching storm, with figures in the foreground to give some sense of the vastness of what those men and women faced. Just really good filmmaking.

One of my fave scenes was when they woke up in the early hours to discover the first (vicious) storm had completely vanished. Not a tug of wind. So they set off for the summit in a kind of misty, twilight world. The 3D captured that so well. It put you there alongside the climbers, and left you wondering what was going to happen next, how long the stillness would last.

I saw it today. Wow. The 3D was high-medium to strong throughout the picture. And just like the trailer, the 3-D makes great use of the mountainous terrain. It's not only great 3-D, it's a very good movie too with excellent storytelling and acting. I can't imagine seeing this film at all in 2-D.

I also saw the Jungle Book 3-D trailer before the film. Very impressive.

Maybe you need to give 3-D another chance? Yeah, there are times when it is so shallow it adds nothing, there are times when it's so misaligned it's hard to look at, and there are times it is used as a gimmick. There are also times where it is so integral that if you saw the movie flat you didn't really see it.

We need to move past the dichotomy of pro or anti 3-D and take a more nuanced view: not everything needs to be 3-d or benefits from the technology, but it has its place: there are times when it can be amazing.

Saw this in IMAX 3D last weekend and completely agree with everyone above. This is top-notch 3D -- some of the best I've ever seen. The first 20-30 minutes drag a bit and are more dialogue-centric, but as soon as the climb begins, it's an absolute visual feast. HIGHLY recommended, especially in IMAX!
