I also love The Long Kiss Goodnight, i am a huge Harlin fan and it pains me to see him make failure after failure as i think he had a great run in the 90's (in terms of movies i've loved).
Yes Arnie would have been Goodspeed. It would have to be toughened up and more macho than the way it turned out with Cage. Arnie said he passed on it because when he was offered the role their was hardly a script. The Rock and Bad Boys are my two and only favourite Michael Bay films they both work so well. Harlin doesn't get enough credit and Die Hard 2 gets unfairly bashed.

The Rock i think is one of the great action movies ever, up there with Die Hard, Aliens and now Fury Road. Bad Boys 2 is action nirvana and hugely enjoyable, but it's a terrible film. I still love it though!

Yeah Harlin has had so many flops now it seems hard to envisage a comeback. Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Cutthroat Island, Long Kiss Goodnight, Deep Blue Sea and more recently The Dyatlov Pass Incident i all love.

I really like 12 Rounds, 5 Days of War, Mindhunters and Driven (yeah i know) too.

I can even find some positives in his Hercules movie, but for 70mil that was ridiculous, looked like 40mil. But i digress. I would love to see him do an Expendables movie or something, guy does great action and with a good script, works wonders.

EDIT: I see he has an action movie called Skiptrace starring Jackie Chan that is in post production at the moment. I have my fingers crossed it'll be a good un!

I am more of a fan of his late 80s most of his 90s work. I haven't seen most of his recent work, I thought Driven was so bad.

Another Harlin fan here, I don't love all of his stuff but I've got a soft spot for that '90s run of Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea. I don't think I've ever fully watched Cutthroat Island.

Can't defend Deep Blue Sea Geoff.

I can and I will! Love that goofy movie. Whatever happened to Saffron Burrows?

That's a tough choice, Arnold as a pirate or the cheesy fun of Eraser. Eraser is one of my favorite Arnold movies so at least it was something worthwhile in place of Pirate Arnie.

Arnie as a pirate would've been the best thing ever or the worst thing ever, maybe both at the same time. "Valk de plank, baby!"

Arnie has only ever been truly terrible in one movie, and that was his cameo in Around the World in 80 days. Arnie as pirate would have been the best thing ever.

Even if he's great all the time, you can't guarantee that the rest of the movie around him will be.

This is true, Sabotage is one that comes to mind.

Deep Blue Sea pretty much killed her career. Nearly every modern review seems to point out how bad Burrows' performance was (since she was the only cast member to play the film straight). I think she's done some television work but nothing on the level of that movie.

She's not the only cast member to play the film straight, they all do. None of them are giving what you'd call 'tongue in cheek' performances. Thomas Jane plays it just as straight as her.

Arnie lunges sword into bad guy, "I think he got the point." I think it would be a bit of both. I would have loved to see it happen.

Arnie as a pirate WITH rail guns, now that really would be the best thing ever.

Uh...Golan passed away last year. Back in the day they knew how to make films, but got greedy with nonsense like theatre chains and stuff like that, and it was a major reason it bankrupted them.

Unfairly, I agree.
It may not be on the level of 1, but it's a great action movie, certainly better than 4 or (shudders) 5.

And I guess I'm one of the few that actually enjoyed Cutthroat Island...
Aside from Modine who was a bit miscast, Langela was great, and you can see the budget on the screen.
