Agreed! Thank you very much Mseeley. 3D looks mostly strong. Anaglyph red/cyan 3D ghosting is usually a good sign of stronger 3D, since neither blue or red can completely block out the other eye's color and it hints at strong double image separation.
I'm going to see it this weekend. Looks really cool and I'm not even a fan of boat/ocean movies.

It's going to have to earn its take this weekend because Star Wars VII is around the corner the following week.

Yes, here's hoping it does well enough to add a blu ray 3D release. Anyone who visits the theaters and has a chance to see it this week, check it out in theaters as it will need the support considering what it's up against the following week.

It opens Dec 26th over here. I intend to see it while it's in cinemas, but am concerned that it may not receive 3D screenings due to the timing.

Just got back from seeing "In the Heart of the Sea" and I enjoyed it very much. I can't say I'm expert on 3D but I thought it was excellent. The movie didn't get a great review in the paper this morning but I was entertained. I guess if you view it at the Imax theater it sure to be spectacular.

The whole IMAX experience was awesome. The movie is very immersive on such a large medium, never mind the enveloping sense of parallax. A couple minor pop outs and fairly consistent depth throughout. Couple of scenes were flat and a couple were converted to the max.

... you get used to quickly though. I took my glasses off at least twenty times and every time the image separation was profound. I enjoyed the movie itself the most. Wish it was longer. The sound is unbelievable!

Movie 4/5
3D 3.5/5
Audio 4/5

Thanks Whippet.
The trailer on the big screen in theaters was something else, so I'm looking forward to this. The sound definitely, and the impact of the whale shattering the boat, and the people plunging into the watery depths. Underwater should be great for 3D also.

Thumbs up A Critics Review

It's rare to see a reviewer go into detail about the 3D , so i thought i should post it.

An old-fashioned good time at the movies

"What In the Heart of the Sea lacks in substance and subtext it makes up for with sheer spectacle. Never what I’d call a flashy visual stylist, Howard and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle nevertheless pull out all the stops here. It’s one of the rare films I’ve seen that actually exploits 3D as a narrative tool rather than a showy gimmick (come to think of it, one of the others was Dredd, also shot by Mantle). While the film does its fair share of strapping cameras to sails and oars and whipping them around or having blood and water splash onto the lens, it also uses 3D to heighten the hallucinatory and hopeless nature of the second half of the film. As the men become increasingly beaten down by sun and starvation, the film becomes blurry and disorienting, using depth of field trickery and slightly-off backgrounds to heighten the despair of the situation. It’s rare that 3D increases the verisimilitude of a film — usually it just means some shit comes flying at you with some regularity — but In the Heart of the Sea actually pulls it off."

I am going to see this in IMAX 3D Sunday or Monday for sure.

I've never understood this generalization. Seems like few reviewers who comment have seen any 3D movies since 1982-83. The majority of modern 3D has zero extreme pop-outs, and the few that exist are usually story-motivated. Almost no one makes "gimmicky" (i.e. poking an object in the audience's eye for no reason) 3D anymore.

Looking forward to this in 3D. It's a movie about a whale versus a boat, so I'm not expecting a deep story, but tension and survival as the main plot.

The timing of this movie hopefully won't affect it too badly for Ron Howard, whose Rush movie didn't do too well last time in ticket sales in theaters.

so what's the framing /aspect ratio of the movie on the IMAX screens - has it been expanded to fill up more of the screen?

I guess that would be 1:85. At the theater I saw the movie, they forgot to close the curtain and there was black bars on the sides of the screen. I guess they didn't care, I was the only one at show. LOL I went to the first showing yesterday.

Well, 1.85 is very close to the digital IMAX AR, so I image it will nearly fill the screen in most IMAX locations. I saw it at the Lincoln Square location (which seems to be alternating their IMAX showings between 2D and 3D), and it used more of the screen that 2.35 films, but was shown windowboxed as all digital IMAX releases are.

The movie was okay, the script and framing devices scenes weren't great, but the whale sequences (though wish there were more) and some images were really good. The 3D was solid and some shots looked outstanding, but I think some scenes didn't work as well as they could have due to the 3D conversion only being added after it was delayed from March to December, so it was filmed with just 2D in mind (Ron Howard has said he's very happy with how the 3D turned out and the conversion technology is stunning, but I think conversions only fully hold up to native when the conversion is in mind while making the film)

I agree that Heart of the Sea was definitely filmed with 2D in mind, with a lot of close ups and framing that cut off the tops of the people's faces; with 3D, best to frame it so their entire head is within frame so they can be whole in the 3D frame, their head standing out from what's around them. Otherwise, nice directing by Ron Howard. Framed for Imax with a square, 16:9 ratio. They had to reduce the screen size to frame it.

I went to see it today, having carefully check the times for the 3D version a day earlier and then get to the theater to find out they switched the times to 2 hours later for the 3D version, so had no choice but to buy tickets for the 2D version. Definitely feels disappointing to see a movie you totally wanted to see in 3D, in 2D. Lesson: Check the times on the day you are going to see it again, not the day before just in case they switch them. But still as entertaining as a 'whale attacks boat' movie can be, though I also agree there could've been a few more whale attacks.
