I haven't seen it and have little interest in seeing it, but that argument is nonsense - movies are not meant to be watched on Youtube or on VHS.

They were in the 90's and no one complained about seeing Song of the South on VHS and laserdisc. The Earth has moved around the sun a few more times, but it's still the same terribly boring melodramatic movie.

Hey, did you know there's a Facebook page devoted to Bobby Driscoll's lace collar from Song of the South?

I wish there was a separate blu ray thread for that movie, that would mean it's been released on blu ray, which I would buy because I actually find it entertaining. But since you opened the door we might as well start discussing Radioland Murders in the Treasure Island thread...

Another title to encourage me to sign up for DMC. Probably wait until at least one more exclusive gets dropped before I sign up. Treasure Island will definitely be one of the purchases when I do.

Almost all Disney movies are boring and lack any real depth. They don't hold up well at all. Song of the South is not a good movie but neither is Treasure Island.

Going to say it again for the last time...anyone on planet Earth can watch that movie on YouTube for free if they're so inclined. They can import old VHS tapes or laserdiscs. I'll never sanction piracy, but Disney seems to turn a blind eye for copies of the movie on e*bay (probably because it shuts some people up). The movie is a staggering, one-dimensional, melodramatic mediocrity, other than the animated sequences. All of the fuss and electrons wasted talking about it are gob-smacking to me -- Fantasia can't get arrested in a movie discussion forum, bring up Song of the South and you're off to the races. Seriously, I don't believe anyone who says they want this movie because they love the movie. At least not in most cases. I think 9 times out of 10, they're Disney collectors with a hole on their shelves and it drives them nuts.
Hey I love Fantasia, but let's not act like it's perfect. The non-animated stuff is about as exciting as a 1950's industrial film, and two of the sequences aren't up to snuff with the rest of the film (Tocatta and Fuge and the Pastoral).

If anything maybe Disney could release the animated sequences of Song of the South since I'd assume that's what most people want to see anyway.

just gotta wait a couple of weeks after they just come out, and there end up being many copies for very reasonable prices.

I will bet you're only option for Song of the South will be an import since that is the way it has been since Laser Disc....

As opposed to 1946, we now live in an enlightened society...

Can't...the "Tar Baby" sequence itself is read as racist by some.

Perhaps, and this isn't a hey let's throw out something else to excuse that, but I'd say the "What Made the Red Man Red" from Peter Pan isn't just something that could be read as racist, it is.

And Let's not forget the mushrooms in Fantasia!

One of these days I am going to have to join and pick up all of these classics they've exclusively released to the DMC.

Or Apu in the early seasons of The Simpsons. People forget, but Goofy was created to mock "hayseed hicks", i.e. southerners and midwest farmers.

I guarantee you'll enjoy watching all of them more than reading about racism in every Disney thread.

I just placed my order of both this and Davy Crockett. This better be in 1.33:1, but I wouldn't mind if they crop the Crockett films since that's how they were presented in theaters (the proof is on the poster).

It's hard to know for absolute certainty without seeing the press book. There was a diehard Disney fan who used to buy these up on eBay and had a master thread in the forum on DVDDizzy.com where he continually updated them. However, I think it's pretty safe to assume that Disney would have stuck with their average aspect ratio of 1.75:1. For the most part, this was Disney's go-to ratio for anything that wasn't cinemascope from the late 1950's through the early 80's.

In general, Disney filmed in an open matte aspect ratio, so most of their widescreen films look cropped in comparison to the fullscreen versions you may have seen on TV or VHS (or DVD, since the bulk of Disney's live action catalogue was not OAR on disc). The Shaggy Dog's DVD featured a fullscreen colorized version and original widescreen black and white. Comparisons of the two show that the widescreen adds a tiny bit of image on the sides, but mostly loses on the top and bottom. These images come from the DVDDizzy.com review.

But since that's what it was framed for, it doesn't feel wrong. It's worth noting that there are a few bizaar exceptions to this rule, such as the TV serial Dr. Syn, alias the Scarecrow. On the Walt Disney Treasures DVD set, they presented the episodes and compilation feature film in true widescreen because they were filmed that way in 1963, even though the primary destination was television.

I got my copy of treasure island yesterday. It is restored brilliantly and is in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1 with Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono sound at 330kbps. The only issue with the film is a common one from that era...whenever there is an optical fade or dissolve the picture quality drops severely.
