This year so far has been my least favourite of the 10s as far as movies are involved.

Uhh clearly 1989 is the best year ever

Road House
Batman
Tango & Cash
Lethal Weapon 2
Christmas Vacation
Say Anything
Heathers
Ghostbusters II
Back to the Future Part III
Licence to Kill

Actually 1985 might be even better

There are still a lot of movies that I need to view from 2015, but so far it hasn't been all that impressive. I think 2014 was a better year overall for films from what I have seen so far.

I think this year has been pretty great. A lot better than people have been giving it credit for. Probably better than last year, which I found a bit overrated as everyone couldn't stop talking about how great it was.

But 2013 has easily been the best of the 10s so far.

Sure, if you ignore the bad ones like Terminator, Jupiter Ascending, Mortdecai, Tommorrowland, Pan, Victor Frankenstein, Fantastic Four...

To a degree I will agree with mastadge - it is one of the worse years as there have been so many high budgeted and highly hyped movies that just bombed at the box office, all with good star power. There are always good years and bad years but so many films this year were pushed like crazy and just did bad that there is no way you can say it was the greatest year ever. And again, you can't use just the boxoffice totals to justify it since unless you account for inflation, you are not dealing with true numbers.

It has absolutely yielded a number of films that have become personal favourites for me: Jupiter Ascending, Crimson Peak, Cinderella, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Man From UNCLE, Inside Out and Ex Machina were all really wonderful movies. I can't think of another year that yielded as many films I flat-out loved.

Is 2015 the greatest year for movies ever?

Not by a long shot. I had very high hopes for a lot of movies when the year started - most entertained, but fell short of expectations. Very few exceeded them. There is a good handful of films I will cherish and enjoy, but I doubt that very many will stand the test of time.

2013 and 14 both had stronger hit films and more intriguing arthouse stuff to explore. 2012 was a lot of fun. 2008 is still my favorite for the years in which I've been alive (not sure what the best year of all time would be, '86 maybe?).

2016 looks like a fun line-up, but I'll probably be keeping my expectations low.

Not even in the top 10.

Top 10 not between 1967-1980, maybe.

of the 10s so far I think 2012 wins clearly, but 11 and 13 are both very strong, too. Honestly last year was a bit overrated and although I'm still behind on this year's stuff it hasn't been overwhelming. 2010 had some gems.

Be honest: how many of those films did you actually even see?

I'll say 1981 was the year for movies. I had blisters on my ass as a result of the time spent in a seat in the cinema watching movies that year

What about 1976? 4 of the greatest films ever, Rocky, Network, Taxi Driver, and All the Presidents Men.

1954 is probably my favorite, or rather many of my favorite films happen to be released then:

Rear Window
Seven Samurai
On the Waterfront
Gojira
Dial M for Murder
La Strada
Sabrina
Samurai I
Sansho the Bailiff
A Star is Born
White Christmas

Replace Rocky with The Tenant, Obsession and Carrie and I can agree with you.

Yeah, 1976's top end was incredible. All the President's Men is a top 10 of all time film, and Network is a top 30.

As of right now, mostly average with a few great movies. I've still yet to see creed, room, spotlight, Star Wars, the hateful eight, and the revenant though, so if all of those are really good it would bump the year up to greatness level for me.

Mad Max is genre defining, it really set a precedent. MI 5 I adored, for me personally it beats the previous benchmark of Ghost Protocol.

other than this, Hollywood movies have largely been formulaic and safe.
