And it's a great score, one I've wanted for years. Though I know it as The Spaceman and King Arthur

I watched this projected last night. I have to say, it's an impressive release and really holds up well on a big screen. Grain nicely intact, good color, detail, and shadows. There might be a touch of EE, but nothing to lose sleep over. Really nice effort by Disney and a cute movie.

Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, most of Disney’s film output seemed to stick to the three “A’s”---animation, adventure, and animals. This all changed in 1959, with the success of the slapstick comedy “The Shaggy Dog.” It was a huge hit, and Disney changed course, with a large percentage of their films for the next two decades being slapstick comedies aimed at a young audience. This trend finally fizzled out with 1980’s “Herbie Goes Bananas.” But let’s face it, they had run the genre right into the ground; some of these films really weren’t very good at all.
In the past I’ve been kind of dismissive of their comedies from the 60s and 70s, but I guess I’ve mellowed as I’ve gotten older. I find I rather enjoy them now! Oh, there are some that are simply terrible (“Million Dollar Duck,” for example, has a terrible reputation). But quite a few are fun to watch, and so nostalgic, and I’m happy to have them in my collection. One such film is 1968’s “Blackbeard’s Ghost.” Somehow I missed out on this one entirely when I was growing up; don’t recall ever seeing it either on television or in the theatre. I did like the book, however---the 1965 novel was written by Ben Stahl, and we had a copy here when I was a kid. The movie is (perhaps not surprisingly) NOTHING like the book, however. I mean, they both have the ghost of Blackbeard as a main character, but that’s about the only similarity; the plot of the film is entirely different. The film features a great cast who all seem to be having fun with their roles; Peter Ustinov really chews up the scenery as the ghost, and has a blast doing it. Harried Dean Jones and the lovely Suzanne Pleshette provide just a hint of romance for the grownups. I’m only sorry that Elsa Lanchester didn’t have a larger role; it’s always a pleasure to see her on the screen. The blu-ray looks EXCELLENT. Previous home video transfers of this film, whether VHS, laserdisc, or DVD, have been absolutely abysmal; beyond terrible. But with this blu-ray we’re finally able to see the film as it looked upon its first release, over 45 years ago. I’m very glad I was able to get a copy before it went out of print. |

I love this film. My parents took us to see it at the drive-in when it came out and I still remember it (I was 7). When I bought the Dvd, I couldn't believe how horrible it looked, especially the night scenes. I didn't know what to expect when the blu came out (I guess I expected to be disappointed) but I was blown away. I agree about Jones, Pleshette and Lancaster but I think Peter Ustinov carries the film. Absolutely perfect casting. I still put it on for the grandkids every now and then and that scene with the "finger gun" makes us laugh every time. A true classic!

When I'm looking for some of these old Disney titles, it really depends on how much nostalgic sentimental value they have for me, as to how much I will pay. Occasionally I may be willing to pay more than seems reasonable!
Let's face it, there's no indication that the majority of the OOP Disney Movie Club discs will ever be re-released, so if you really want a particular title, the price is what it is. I looked at the list of completed eBay transactions for Blackbeard's Ghost, and it looks like the price simply doesn't go below $40; no one has offered it for less. |
