Default 2nd wave adopters favoring Hd DVD

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News...x?NewsId=22049

Obviously there is much work to be done by the BD group.

The 2nd wave saw a cheap product. Factor in their ignorance of both HD DVD and blu-ray, and you have "2nd wave format adopters".

Cheaper blu-ray stand-alones, heavy marketing presence (NFL on Fox has blu-ray commercials on nearly every break--and there are tons), a lower priced PS3, and WB's rumored turn will all result in a nice Holiday bump.

haha yeah and of course NBC NFL has been showing HD DVD commercials.

It's silly... this war.

So someone polled a few people who said they were "thinking" about buying a HDM player, and the people who are "thinking" about it prefer HD DVD?

Too bad for HD DVD the people that actually do purchase HDM content prefer Blu-ray.

The whole premise of this survey is retarded. Absolutely meaningless.

Studios count sales in dollars, not in people who "think" about purchasing a player in the next year.

If this is true than why on Black Friday we showed a large influx of Blu-Ray players and software being purchased? Please, we are winning this war and once the WB signs exclusively to Blu, it's all over for those sad bunch of people who bought into the HD-DVD lies.

this is actually old news, and imo it is a very limited study.
Fact is, there are still better sales for Blu-ray than HD-DVD, and most people are probably still confused by it and don't understand what Blu-ray is and see the words HD and DVD and think that is the way to go.

I think time will tell, and that Blu-ray will still win. I do not think these new HDTV owners will actually be ANY factor in the war, since it seems now to be down to the studios and not the consumers, as WB has already stated.

Among HDTV Intenders who are likely to purchase a new high-def DVD player in the next six months, 43% prefer HD DVD, 27% prefer Blu-ray, and 30% are undecided.
Did they count those people expressing interest in a PS/3?

Quote:
The second (and more sizable) wave will consist of early mass-market consumers who, while less enthusiastic about technology per se and very price sensitive, are more likely to favor HD DVD (a conclusion grounded in TDG's latest primary research).

Article Translation:

a younger demographic without a lot of money prefer a cheaper solution to HiDef. No surprises there.

"Today's high-def DVD owner is likely an early adopter with a knack for power gaming; most certainly tech-sophisticates not at all mainstream in temperament." = you gamers and a/v people don't count.

Early adopters: We drive new tech; the rest of you are along for the ride.

True Article Translation:

A so called "Market Research" firm, that was in the past hired by Toshiba to present pro HD DVD and anti-Blu Ray "facts" at the Home Media Expo 07, has published an opinion based on a survey dating as far back as June 07, and that is now mysteriously unavailable to check out on their web site, and has AMAZINGLY enough sent press releases at the Xmas period to various web sites and publications about what they think about HD DVD being more prone to be adopted compared to Blu Ray.

Isn't that an Amazing coincidence ? O.o

+1

What is this group releasing this study and what have they done in the past with the format war.
Well if what you say is right, why would anyone trust them?
Besides... the market shows that what they say is NOT true, and it sounds extremely biased and uninformed to me, not giving a proper account of the study and neglecting the gaming community when taking about young HDTV adopters.

Stands reason to believe that Blu-ray manufacturers have their own marketing researchers who have drawn the same conclusion about the "first wave" ending in 2008 and the "second wave" beginning. As mentioned above, prices are coming down, and the technology is maturing. 2.0 players are likely to be available. Early mass market purchasers are also, I suspect, likely to be sensitive to available content.

What the article doesn't give you (as they never do) is the research method. Phone calls, email, internet advertisement, snail mail, etc., what questions were asked, etc.

I was a high def "thinker" for about 4 years before jumping in, and it appears I am still in the first wave.

Spot on! As I said in the original thread on this article, consulting firms don't do work pro bono - they're hired by someone before they lift a pencil. As anyone familiar with such firms knows, the first rule of consulting is to know the client's desired answer before beginning work and, to your point, we all know who hired Diffusion, eh?

Considering that something like 50% of current HDTV owners think they can just plug in their old digital cable box to their brand new HDTV and they are watching Hi-def. ("Look ma! That icon in the lower left says the show is in HD!") I wouldn't put much money on what people that are just getting HDTV's think of the format war.

and If this makes any one feel a little more confident, we have the sammy and sony both under 300 bucks and they are flying off the shelves. I knew this price point would be hot, but I am really excited to see some numbers.
