Yesterday I called The Hunt for Red October "the real Die Hard 2." Patriot Games is more like the official Die Hard 2, pretty lame as a follow-up to its brilliant predecessor but very good on its own and compared to most movies of its kind. Any filmmaker who can make a tense scene involving bunch of people staring at computer screens deserves quite a bit of credit.

Excellent. If The Hunt for Red October was Die Hard and Patriot Games was Die Hard 2, Clear and Present Danger is Did Hard with a Vengeance. In other words, not quite as good as Part 1 but a substantial improvement over Part 2.

My first Blu-ray purchases of 2016

Hastings

- Green Lantern came with an unused UV code and a good condition slipcover

These two were blind buys, but they were only $1.60 each after the discount (previous rentals)

Walmart

I got the six from Hastings for under $18, as they were all B1G1 for $1

The two from Walmart were $4.96 each, and both came with a $10 VUDU credit

(Push was a blind buy, but I remember wanting to see it when it first came out I just never got around to it)

These are the first new pick ups of the year I got yesterday.

Got this at Target for $5.

Then I got these two used from FYE during their Buy 1, Get 1 for a $1 sale. Wild was $9.94 and August: Osage County was a $1. Plus it was brand new factory sealed yet. and they were selling it used for $5.94. It was $11.60 for both movies. So not bad for 2 blind buys.

Affleeeeeck!

I wouldn't mind seeing Ben Affleck play Jack Ryan again. These days he would probably do a pretty good job. In 2002, however, he was an awful choice. Luckily the film overall is very well-made and the supporting cast is terrific, but Ben drags it down.
