Post For N00bs - Getting Devices Hooked up to your 4k TV/Display.

This is a N00b's guide to getting 4k content to your 4k TV/Display. I've seen a couple posts here and there on the forum and on facebook with people complaining they aren't getting 4k content from their devices to their TV's.

Edit 1: Marking out PC specs for now. Currently no way to view UHD BD on PC other than privatized equipment.

Key:
Not Working for UHD BD
Connections ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  • HDMI < 2.0 - TV needs to support Dual HDMI Simultaneous Connection and will more than likely only support 30Hz refresh rate.
  • HDMI >= 2.0 - Make sure to plug into HDMI 2.0 Compatible port on TV as well. Supports 60Hz refresh rate.
  • Display Port >= 1.2 - Full Display Port is Recommended (looks a little bit like HDMI but is not symmetrical). Supports refresh rates higher than 60Hz (but have fun being able to render a game at 120fps while at 4k natively).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Players/PCs/Media Devices------------------------------------------------------
  • BD Players -
4K upscaling players - Most are capable of playing back 4K res media files. Check the specs and manuals of your player
    UHD BD players
  • PCs/Computers - (Can be a combination of either or a single component)
CPU: Compatable Intel CPU with embedded graphics (Recommended - Skylake CPUs).
GPU: NVidia or AMD that has a maximum resolution of 4K resolution or higher.
Output Port(s): Display Port 1.2 or newer, HDMI 1.4 (Dual Output) or HDMI 2.0 or Higher
I believe any Blu-ray Optical Drive will work with UHD BDs, that being said to be extra sure, I recommend getting one that has support for BDXL.
  • Other
    Sony 4K Media Streaming Box
    Roku 4K
    Amazon Fire TV 4K
NVidia Shield TV - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AVR/Switches/Splitters/Extenders/etc--------------------------------------------

Pretty much make sure that your AVR or other switching/splitting/extending device can output 4K and that you have your source input plugged into an HDMI 2.0 port.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4K Media Providers----------------------------------------------------------------
  • DirecTV - Must be upgraded to compatible subscription.
  • YouTube - Free
  • Netflix - Must be upgraded to compatible subscription and have minimum required bandwidth to support the feature.
  • Sony - Marketplace
  • UHD BD - Coming in the next fiscal year.
  • Vudu - Marketplace

I'm sure other providers will arise in the next year. Remember to be aware not every source will be truly 4K like Netflix and YouTube due to the way they have to compress the content. And also remember that you need a decent internet download speed to stream/download 4K content from online providers. And by decent I mean 10 Mbps or higher for couples and households of 3 or less persistent internet users. 25 Mbps or higher for an actively online family that games and streams movies at the same time. I live in a house with 5 other IT Pros and we have 100Mbps which can be taxed on rare occasions but 100Mbps is overkill for a typical family of 5.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was just a quick tip guide on how to get everything going with mostly everyone's new 4K TV's feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or missing something. My goal with this is to create a living guide to 4K content setup (and hopefully it gets stickied).
