It's a pretty rare to see a big studio film getting this many shout-outs from the mainstream press for its 3D, as I've seen it mentioned very positively in several reviews, which is great to see. And particularly like hearing that it goes strong on pop-outs, which I understand not using in a more serious film like Everest (where the depth still does help sell immersion), but should be a requirement at least a couple times with a lighthearted popcorn style movie which releases in 3D like this.

I have been surprised how virtually no mention was given to the 3D in the TMNT movies (don't recall any big reviews saying something about it in the second film, and the reaction to 3D seemed meh from the few reviews which mentioned it with the first) as those are some of the best recent 3D experiences IMO with striking depth and fun pop-outs where approriate, and would be very pleased it Ghostbusters is on their level.

Also, there will be an extended cut on the Blu with 15 extra minutes, though I'm gonna assume that cut is 2D only as usual even though Sony gave them extra money to finish the VFX for the extended cut (at least seems likely we will get a full package with 3D, 4K, and a extended cut)

Cool. Looking forward to your 3D review Blastcage.
I'll try to see it on the weekend.

Thanks. Seriously, I agree that it's sad a stunning 3D movie like TMNT Out of the Shadows didn't get mentioned much regarding the strong 3D in it. Warcraft is up there too for the 3D in 2016, along with KFPanda 3 3D.

Caught the late show last night. Don't have time to write in depth, but a few thoughts.

This does indeed have more pop-outs than any modern 3-D film I've seen in recent memory. They're all over the place, especially any scenes involving beams being fired There's also some nice exaggerated 3-D on city fly-over shots. I didn't think the other scenes were a particularly impressive conversion. Scenes with just the actors were little more than several layers of cut outs, without much in the way of added volume. Maybe that stuff isn't as important to people. If pop-outs are what matter to you, this film delivers. It seemed they broke the aspect ratio more times than any film I've seen do that, sometimes to great effect.

One name I noticed in the credits was a visual effects credit for Eric Brevig. This doesn't seem to be listed online yet, so I'm wondering if I read that correctly. Some will know that name as the director of 3-D movies such as Journey to the Center of the Earth, and for visual effects in numerous films going back to 80s 3-D such as Captain EO.

I'm wondering if his involvement may have contributed in some way to the generous amount of out-of-screen imagery.

Finally a big studio movie with pop-outs!
I hope this movie make a mint in 3D sales and we get more movies beyond the screen.

I wasn't originally planning to see this as I was not wowed by the trailers. Yet from the 3D reviews thus far I may go ahead and see it if only for the 3D. I want to be wowed by the 3D in the theater. The last few movies just have not done it for me.

I've got ticket for Saturday morning (1st show) and it's on the largest screen with Atmos but not in 3D. I'd have to fork over too much money for 2 adults and two kiddies tickets cause the 3D version isn't showing early. Usually they would have a new release on the big screen with Atmos and 3D (if applicable) but not this time. I'll check the 3D down the road on BD.

"Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, if that means anything to anyone.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised, hearing about the favorable reviews and the good use of 3D. Looking forward to the Blu now.

Haven't seen the film yet but I've watched some reviews about it and they say the 3D is very good. There are pop outs and moments where they break the frame (Like in TMNT).

Sounds promising though.

As for the other pop-outs...

I'd tell you, but I'd wind up getting zapped into the Ecto-Containment Unit for supernatural spoilerage.

Yeah, that would've been great to see Slimer fly out down the hallway right into the screen. Kind of surprised they didn't bring back that very memorable shot in some form for this one. Looking forward to this over the weekend, thanks.

Two other films I'd love to see in 3D are Alien and Poltergeist 1984...no real reason for those to not be converted. I can definitely think of some scenes from Poltergeist 1984 that would be badass in 3D.

Kinda figured a Ghostbusters shirt was needed, I had meant to buy one ages ago, lol. I'm half tempted to get a bumper sticker since my new car is white, but I've already got one bumper sticker(Stars and Stripes), and I do have reservations about putting even 2 bumper stickers on a Mustang...anyways, I'll probably give my review of the film on Saturday since I'll be occupied Friday, but that gives me time to better organize my thoughts and whatnot.
I had a Ghostbusters shirt years ago with the ghost logo on there. It was a favorite shirt to wear around the house but I remember the logo started to crack and peel off eventually.
Glad you got a replacement car after that situation earlier. Yeah, I would wait till seeing the movie to get your thoughts on it as bumper stickers can be tough to remove.

TMNT 2 3D yes and if Ghostbusters' 3D beats that movie for 3D this year, I'll be impressed.

This film had the most frame breaking I think I've ever seen. The 3D is fantastic and to be honest, the movie was pretty entertaining.

I felt the same way. Although to be honest, I didn't attempt to count them, and it's not something I've kept a particularly close track of in other movies.

What's amazing is the company that did our 3D conversion they said, 'What we can do, since we're in widescreen, is we can play with the bars. Let's break through that!' And I was just like a kid in a candy store. 'Let's do more of that, let's do more of that!' And then if you see it in IMAX, there's the sequence where we opened up the bars to full IMAX.
Can't wait to see this at IMAX theater.

Saw it last night and I enjoyed it. I will say the 3D was probably a factor into the enjoyment. It was one of the best 3D movies I have ever seen at the theatre or at home. Although the background I thought I was seeing some overlapping images in the far distance objects but nothing too distracting to take away from the fun factor. Some jokes and gags didn't work for me movie wise but thankfully some did. I can only imagine how awesome this would be on a true 3D IMAX screen, and I will be buying this when it hits bluray.

Plus stay until after the credits for bonus sequel setup scene

in my opinion 3D and immersive audio makes up for many 'other' faults in a movie - the opportunity for me to see this in IMAX-Laser 3D / 12 channel sound next Monday night has me pretty stoked.

It's not an artifact from the source, but the day projected light can be controlled, having no illumination present on the screen for black or semi-dark images, the same way direct-view OLED works, there will always be a potential for ghosting artifacts.

Interesting Those are different from the glasses we get in my local Imax.

I haven't managed to see GB in Imax yet, there were no Imax screenings until 4 days into the release, and they were all daytime. Caught it at the largest screen it was playing on though, Odeon Isense. My other local cinema would've been more convenient but didn't even have it in 3-D, so they didn't get my money. They also screened NWave's Robinson Crusoe in flat-only a few months back, so it's clear they just don't get it. I get a bit frustrated with them.

Yeah. We ended up at a "LieMAX" smaller IMAX theater. Wife couldn't make the drive to Hollywood to see it at the Chinese.

We all really enjoyed the movie. One of our favorite theater experiences in a while.
Personally, I think it completely blows the original away, but I was never that wowed by the original, anyway.
This one had top-notch special-effects and amazing sound.
The original had some of the weakest special effects I've seen for a "blockbuster" type of movie. Especially coming out after Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Close Encounters, Poltergeist, etc. that all had much better SE.

I thought the 3D was converted nicely from what I saw at this theater. Took everything, especially the ghosts and special effects, to another level.
The switch to full screen for the last portion of the film was cool. Hope they replicate this on the Blu-ray.

This will be a for sure purchase asap on 3D Blu. Wife already wants to see it again in the theater. Might have to go up to the Chinese for the ultimate Ghostbuster experience!
