I got a PS3 last year for x-mass (actually I bought it Nov 23rd but put it under the tree for myself and family.)

I've used my backlit harmony remote with it since day 1. There are many ways to use an IR remote with a PS3. Nyco makes a IR remote that available very cheap from Gamestop and once you have that you can use the IR Receiver with the Harmony or any other universal remote.

I would be tempted to get the Bluetooth remote but it doesn't have backlighting which is critical because I keep the theater pitch black during movie playback (the room has no windows and dark walls and carpet.)

Way back then you had to wait for DVD up convertion but it's built in now for DVD and also for Ps2 games too.

I don't doubt it's still the best Blu Ray player there is.

I have the BD remote so all the info and commands are at your finger tips. If you don't have the remote the controller works everything, the select button will bring up all the info you are speaking of.
As for me I think it is very easy to use and a monster as far as load times, this along makes it convenient.

I like the BD, but I must agree that backlighting would be nice. It's not totally necessary for me though since my HT room is lit sofltly w/ Christmas lights around the perimeter of the ceiling.

You don't really need a backlight on the remote after a week cause by then you would have memorized the button layout, its pretty simple really. The one with the stub is "play"

I still use my controller and it works fine. I have looked into getting the remote, but for some reason I havent bought it yet. Maybe I will buy tomorrow when I get off work. People on this forum seem to like it very much. But I love my PS3. It has really exceeded my expectations. And the crazy thing about it is that it can be upgraded so it will only get better. I am happy that I took that dive into Blu.

the sixaxis is extremely convenient to use, but not obvious for a new person using it (l2/r2 are FF/rew l1/r1 chapter skip and start play/pause)

if you want you can get the remote (which is also blue tooth)

and if you want to use it with your existing universal remote there are USB solutions and I just saw recently found out of an other one (that can imitate the PS button) http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin...cgi?14086,2#34

Man, PS3 is the most convenient system you can get and yes it is future proof. Okay after you buy that BD title put the disc in the system and play around with the controller. The controller is really lot simpler than you might think if you have never used one to play a game. It is very intuitive like if you press the right side button (R1) then it will naturally skip a scene and reverse operation with L1 and R2 (the one under R1) will fast forward and reverse operation with L2. For all kinds of disc info and display press Select and it gives you everything from what kind of audio decoder you're using to VIDEO CODEC the BD is encripted with. You can also change the style of the display but hitting Select simultaneously. Plus you never know if you want to try out that new game everyone is talking about and you can definitely use those 40 GB or 80 GB for your other home entertainment needs like pics., downloaded contents, video rips, loads of music. You can even use the internet from your couch wirelessly. Can't beat the ps3 in terms of value and future investment.
