I have A*P*E on field sequential 3D DVD. It's a tough sit
but throw a few drinks into the mix and it can be a hoot!
Looking forward to more restoration magic from the 3-D
Film Archive! 👍

I remember seeing a gorilla on the loose movie as a kid when my local station did a 3D day that included some Three Stooges shorts and Inferno, but it wasn't this. It was a regular big gorilla as I recall.

But despite never having heard of this movie before this announcement, that trailer looks HILARI-BAD! I can't wait to see this! This kind of movie is right up my alley, and having it in awesomely-restored 3D is going to be an absolute treat!

Looking forward to it!

You probably saw Gorilla at Large.

This looks comical and if the 3D is great, even better.

Always good to see 3-D film archive going ahead with a new release.

What sort of condition is this in... did you have any difficulty securing decent quality elements to work with? I often wonder with independent films.

Since Bob hasn't answered, my guess would be yes. Bob has mentioned in previous posts that scanning and creating a digital master usually takes 3 months. Once it's delivered to the distributor (in this case it's Kino), it's a few months before it's released. So I'm guessing late 2016.

There were three f-stop settings: 4.5, 6.3 and 11.

My birthday was just a few weeks ago, so I'm having the typical "another year older" memory lapse on the focal length. I want to say 35 millimeters.

EDIT: Lipton in one place says 32 mm., and in another place 35. The number "32" was tickling my memory, but I cannot say for sure right now which figure is correct.

There is a document on Bob's website which claims a 2.64-inch I/A for Space-Vision, which would work out to 67 millimeters, and that's how I came by that number. Right or wrong, I have been carrying that number around in my head for quite a while, and, unlike so many things, it has not leaked out. Ha ha ha! :-)
Thanks for the reply, Mike.
Happy belated birthday.

I wonder where the lens is now? And if it's still serviceable. Just curious. Wouldn't it be fun to take it out of the box and play with it for a day. Burn some film. See what we get.

Watching the trailer again, I was waiting for Godzilla to show up. This giant Gorilla does look more realistic in the face compared to King Kong in Godzilla vs King Kong anyway.

I wonder what happened to Dan Symme's 3-D camera rigs after he died. Does anyone know?

Richard, the story I've heard is that Dan Symmes' ex-wife, perhaps hostile to his memory, held a one-day estate sale. Anything left unsold at the end of the day was meant to go into the Dumpsters. Eric Kurland and the late Ray Zone were present, and did everything in their power to rescue as much as possible. We owe them many thanks.

(The items Eric managed to save form a major part of his proposed 3-D museum, which I urge people to support in whatever way they can. Among other things, he owns the only known surviving Natural Vision rig, once in the possession of Dan Symmes.)

No one seems to know where Symmes' Dimension 3 lens prototype wound up. That is one item I personally would love to see. In the special 3-D issue of Cinefantastique, Symmes mentions something about not having it patented, to prevent rivals discovering how it works. To me this is heartbreaking, as we can now only guess at how Dimension 3 was structured. From the photograph I've seen (Mr. Symmes holding it in his hand), it looks astonishingly compact.

On the subject of the present whereabouts of Space-Vision, I imagine it is locked away in a room somewhere at Capitol Records, along with prototype lenses from the late 1980s that were meant to expand the Space-Vision range, supplying an array of focal lengths and full compatibility with modern reflex cameras:

No, there's still no release date for A*P*E, but the topic was brought up recently on 3-D Film Archive's facebook, and I came across the following post from yesterday which gives a pretty good summary assessment of the 3-D.

There are MANY pop-out effects, and those that don't quite work are funny in themselves. Soldiers stick their rifles right at your nose, smiling all the while; styrofoam rocks glide awkwardly on wires toward the camera; a beam of wood seems to nearly impale the viewer as it comes through a windshield, flaming arrows, etc. My favorite is the realism of a helicopter taking off, as small debris flies toward the camera.

I've never seen A*P*E in 3-D, so this is all very interesting. I'm not expecting a particularly competent movie, but it sounds like a fun time!

A*P*E - not to be confused with King Kong - is on the operating table as we speak. Dr. Kintz is working his stereoscopic magic and I can say this with every confidence. No one has ever seen it looking this good.

For better or worse, our restoration will be the best you've ever seen!
