Pacific Rim was good but I loved Crimson Peak. CP has more rewatch value and treads weirder territory for me than Rim did. Plus it's a Del Toro movie with an R rating, which I feel really lets him cut loose than his PG-13 works.

I honestly think Pacific Rim is one of the most underrated, underappreciated and misunderstood blockbusters of the decade. I also understand why though, because it's a love letter to two very Japanese subgenres that only have a limited niche appeal in the West. To a large extent I think you have to be a fan of kaiju films or mecha anime to "get" it. If you aren't, chances are it will just look like the big, loud, dumb and colorful tentpole film its detractors write it off as.

I recall reading years ago about Del Toro's proposed remake of Creature From The Black Lagoon done as a period piece where the creature is more humanoid in appearance and he (it?) and the heroine, uhhh, have relations (a provocative idea as it brings to fruition the sexual subtext of the Creature series). Sounds as if elements of that proposed remake may find their way into this project. I was somewhat disappointed with Crimson Peak as the story and characters didn't quite engage me ( though it was drop-dead gorgeous to look at). Here's hoping this is as interesting as it sounds.

GDT directed WW2 love story with Doug Jones as an aquatic creature who's exposed to the outside world? Kinda sounds like it could be a Hellboy spinoff!

I had forgotten about this film until I watched a trailer for it on Friday when I went to watch War of the Planet of the Apes. It seems to be, from the trailer, a drama/thriller with sci-fi elements that takes place during the Cold War; so it definitely feels like a period piece as well. And of course it has that fairy-tale essence that by now is a Del Toro trademark.
The trailer definitely holds back at least some thing(s), because, if it weren't for the rating (R for sexual content, graphic nudity, violence and language) I would've have assumed it was a family friendly feature. I say this because the trailer does not show anything that would make you think that it gets dark or that it deals with adult themes. But based on the rating I am assuming that at some point it evolves into something darker. I'll watch anything that Del Toro makes and this definitely has my interest. I just hope it has more substance and not just a lot of style. Crimson Peak was not bad in my book, but it definitely had more style than substance. It's not a bad film IMO, but it could have been better. And then you also have Octavia Spencer. I am pretty curious to see how it'll turn out with her and Del Toro working together. I think she can be really great if she's given a good role/character. I'm surprised the trailer hasn't been officially posted online yet... |

Yeah I literally just saw the trailer before Apes and was surprised to see it isn't online yet.
Part of me wonders if this might be a semi-prequel to hellboy because the water creature looked a hell of a lot like Abe Sapien. Looks fantastic though and I am there! Last edited by Britnasty; 07-16-2017 at 09:44 PM. |
