If no one bought digital would it still be the future? Nothing is set in stone.

I think with Amazon prime, hulu, netflix and the other streaming services coming out soon, rental prices will be cheaper or be included as part of a package price that one can subscribe to.

It's not set in stone but it's definitely leaning towards it. Cable TV is dying as the number of cord-cutters increases day by day and content providers are going to combat that with streaming.

For the record, I'm all for physical media. That's why I own 400+ blu-rays, lol.

PlayStation just gave me a free $10. Used it towards the digital Revenant. I'll still buy the movie eventually too but I'm waiting until I upgrade to 4K for that one

Cable is not dying. Not by a long chalk.

Incorrect. With streaming, they control content. If you download a physical copy and store it on your hard drive, that will never go away.

And you may never give up physical media, but what will you do when the studios do?

It's certainly on the decline here in Canada. We have a monopoly on telecommuncations with 3 ******* anti-competitive companies running the show that provide shiity, overpriced services. A lot of people are moving towards Netflix or cutting TV all together.

What about DRM? Sometimes you need an active internet connection for playback.

Cable companies will just steadily increase their rates for cable internet access to compensate for customers cutting cords and stations going the streaming route.
People will still watch local news broadcasts, but with streaming services like Netflix putting out such good programming, I think it's the wave of the future, and a very good one. I can't remember the last time one of the major networks put out anything near as good as House of Cards, Daredevil, or Game of Thrones. AMC did well with Mad Men and Walking Dead. I'm sure AMC will be a streaming app eventually.

As for movies, I think we will see independent movies skip the theaters and go straight to streaming in homes. I think the streaming services will give them more freedom to create than the studio production system and everyone will benefit.

I still see music CDs for sale, so I don't think blu rays will totally go away.

Actually, I am correct unless you download the copy to your computer/hard drive. What if a studio decides to pull a title from streaming? I sure hope people have downloaded it by that point.

Then I will stop purchasing movies.

So what do they do about sports or films? What you are suggesting isn't cord cutting. It's losing a whole entertainment option. I can see more babies being born in Canada!
