I don't think it's the right question to ask:

They are different ways to experience content: if the content was meant to be watched in SDR originally, it's better to leave it that way.

Same thing for HDR: when done right, it's amazing quality and going forward it will be the new standard.

I still don't think it can work great on all content. For example I prefer SDR for film sources because it's "more"gentle"

Netflix's 4K SDR content is really sharp. I've been enjoying Stranger Things

There are very few TVs that are fully HDR-capable in terms of the peak brightness they're able to achieve.

IMO, the industry would be better served in the near-term to adopt Dolby Vision, because the output is then scaled depending on the capabilities of the display itself, which is a better system for UHD TVs with peak brightness below 1000 nits.

Some tvs have a fake hdr setting for that. On Samsung it's called HDR+. I think LG has one as well. I'm not sure about others.

I think it's a common feature, but more importantly you'll want to see how much more of the colour gamut the TVs offer, some have HDR and HDR conversion, but they don't actually go much further than Rec. 709, so even with UHD BDs you won't get much more.

Homie it really isnt no answer... Ive been asking the same question for years on here... I want to know the difference between using a 4k upconvert player watchin a movie vs the picture ona 4k uhd player if ur tv doesnt have hdr... and if i was worth it. I just bit the bullet and bought the 4k player... uhds look good but I think we are missing out without the hdr. with that said enjoy ur tv with it and upgrade when u can or want to. I got the samung player and at times my panasonic upconvert player looks better with regular blurays and the samsung looks better with the 4k uhd movies on the sharpness end. even without hdr ghostbusters 2017 looks sharp dark and rich. but battleship doesnt look as good.

I have a LG TV with no HDR.

I bought the Phillips UHD player and hooked it up and ran it thru my Denon receiver that was supposedly compliant. The picture on Star Trek 2009 looked really good but not a lot better than the Blu-ray. I realized it was being downscaled to 1080p because of the receiver!

So I ran the picture direct to the TV and the sound thru the receiver -- but then the colors looked muted compared to when it was running at 1080p.

I could not manage to get it to run at 2160 AND have the colors look normal at the same time. Only one or the other.
I got frustrated and returned the player.

I really want to get a UHD player but I want to know if I will encounter this problem again with another player.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I really can't replace my TV (I love it and can't afford a new HDR one) but I don't want to watch UHD discs that are less colorful than my standard Blu-rays. And I sure don't want to return another player.

You just need a UHD player that can do a HDR to SDR conversion but offer rec .2020, Oppo, Sony, Panasonic.

Thanks. I can't afford the Oppo, but I don't see any Sony or Panasonic models for sale yet -- at least at Amazon.

Edit: The new Sony is on back order at Amazon.

Will the new Sony UBP-X800 do the conversion?

I own a HDR set and I love it I would never even think about going back to SDR cause hdr adds a lot of depth to the overall picture and it gives it's that extra icing on the cake it all depends what type of tv you own cause the cheaper TV's out there that have HDR aren't as good as the more expensive sets that can do HDR properly.

The player is designed to be able to disable HDR, pick the output resolution of your set, choose between display, or projector, but can't guarantee its going to look great on your display, but its will work. But if you want things like luminescence adjustments, that's Oppo and Panasonic territory. Best Buy sells open box Panasonic's.

I just don't want the colors to look more subdued than the exact same images from Blu-ray.

That was the problem with the Phillips -- the colors looked much brighter and better when the player was set to 1080p output. When I switched it to 2160 the colors dimmed.

I'm looking for a slight upgrade -- a little more resolution/detail and color...
not a little less!

My old Blu-ray player is dying and I figure I'll upgrade to a UHD player for some modest benefit.

Buy one from BB and try it out, got nothing to loose, if its not up to your liking, get your money back. I already put a youtube video about it here.

Default hdr to sdr conversion on Sony UBP-X800 while watching on LG 65UB9800

So to report on how the Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu Ray player works with a non-HDR 4K television:

AMAZING! The Blu Ray player has the HDR to SDR converter and it tells you when you start a movie that it is converting the HDR formatted disc to SDR so that's an automatic switch that's built into the player.

As far as the first movie (Lone Survivor) goes the experience was eye candy.

Thanks! You are a true gentleman.
That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I absolutely love my current 4K TV that I got for a great price. It is stunning despite not having HDR. I just wanted a player that would be compatible with it and yield a small upgrade over how fantastic regular Blu-rays already look.
Going straight to Amazon to order the Sony before my Prime run outs on Friday.

EDIT: Ordered the Sony X800 from Amazon. Hope it's back in stock soon!

I hope this lasts as long as my Sony DVP-S300 DVD Player. I bought that in April 1998 and it has a manufacture date of February 1998 on the back. It still is going strong!! It is the Kirk Douglas of DVD players. I think I paid more than $300 for it back then.
