Yep. I have the Hong Kong version which defaults to Cantonese. Last night I watched The Mermaid 3D again, but this time in Mandarin.

99% of Hong Kong Blu-rays have English subtitles, but usually not dubs, which are awful anyway.

No English audio track. But there is an option for English subtitles. It's easy to get used to reading subtitles while viewing the movie.

Here is a link to read Martin Liebman's review of the 2D USA release. I recommend the Hong Kong 3D blu-ray because it's region A for those who do not have a region free 3D BD player. YesAsia ships very fast to the USA.

If you are uncertain about The Mermaid, check out some of the videos on YouTube.

WAF = Wife Acceptance Factor.

She likes 3D movies but REALLY Hates sub-titles. I watched the French mini-series "Count of Monte Cristo" with sub-titles which I enjoyed. Wife ran away when she saw the sub-titles.

Simple solution: tell her not to look at the subtitles and you will recite them to her.

In exchange you must insist that she offer her "services" to you after the movie.

Probably my favourite HK 3DBD. Can’t say it’s the best 3D of the lot, but very good 3D + entertaining + originality makes this one a winner

96Khz is the native sampling rate for THD but films are sampled at 48khz so I assume they are upsampled in the receiver. Some Chinese films are upsampled to 96Kz on disc. What I don't know is whether it really makes a difference. Also, is the Chinese audio native 96Khz or also upsampled which is what the descriptions suggest.

Just about every Asian film I have bought I would have enjoyed them even in 2D, but they are much more fun in 3D. This film doesn't benefit quite as much as the others I have watched but it does have very nice 3D moments. This was subtle for a Chow movie and I kind of wish he went a little overboard like he has previously. But it is a fun film and I really like the story plus there is some Chow craziness on show

Lukas,

I think you're on the wrong track. "Is it HD or 4K or something else?"-- It's something else. 96K upsampling has nothing to do with video. It's audio related. Not in "layman's" terms, but here's an article about it:

Interesting. When I read about Meridian I wondered if the 48khz source was upsampled in the receiver but that is not the case. So in answer to my questions, 48khz stays at 48khz and the Chinese discs are indeed upsampled and not native. I suppose the final question is if the Chinese use MLP to upsample and not just some local technology.

HK version
PlayAsia is reliable and cheap -- $21 +/-
DDDHouse is reliable and only a hair more (Airmail Shipping) 23-24 I think

German Steelbook -- Amazon.de $25-26 shipped (no english audio or subs)

I'm sure they're some others, but those were the first 3 of the usual suspects t I checked after seeing Amazon.com price of $45

The German Steelbook is 10 Euros which is about $12 so I assume the rest of the cost is shipping?

I just rechecked and the Product Details states it has English subs.

For the HK disc, yes

I haven't seen any mention of English on the German item (not always the easiest thing to track down info though).
EDIT -- I rechecked the back cover photo and it mentions Mandarin and German Audio tracks, but only German subs.

Pretty much -- 10EUR disc (8.33 after VAT removal) + 13EUR shipping + whatever Sales Tax
I looked at a couple of the usual Marketplace sellers that ship from UK/Germany (Rarewaves) -- lower shipping, much higher item price.

I have a couple other items I could use to make a multi item order shipping a bit less painful, but I can live without some English.
Just as cheap to order solo from HK though and get the English Subs.
