Who did you say you talked to?? Sony customer service? and why did you call them if this annoucement has been out there? in the general public.

You have to be an idiot to install 3rd party firmware updates on stand alone BD players. This is not the psp. This would be like people with unlocked iphones updating their firmware through itunes and then complaining that their iphone bricked. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to have common sense.

I would identify #5 as "The OP was one of those who gets all his firmware updates on a disk through the website and didn't see it yet, since Sony's offices and websites apparently aren't as quick on the news as their Playstation network, which's why it takes forever, and the website was still showing 2.01...Even though most users just automatically download the firmware update through the wireless System Settings, and the 2.10 upgrade was already there for the taking in the usual place."

Smile Panasonic DMP-BD30K Firmware

Do Not download any firmware updates for Panasonic Blu-ray players from this site. What it takes you to is Japan's web site. It is not for North America's players. If in doubt, call their toll free support line.

The problem is their "toll free tech support line" is basically wrong.

Panasonic Japan creates and posts the firmware for all regions. Eventually, Panasonic USA gets their act together and copies the North American firmware to the US site and sends a message to the tech support people saying that the new firmware is posted. That often doesn't happen until weeks after the Japan site has posted the firmware.

We're early adopters over here, and impatient ones. So we tend to just go to the source for our firmware.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

Smile Firmware Update

When you download the new firmware update and copy it to a CD-ROM, the player will not recognize the disc. After talking with customer support, I was told the firmware updates, even though you choose North America, will not work in US players. They said to wait until they are shown on pansonic.com, not panasonicjp.com. At any rate, thanks for the welcome to the forum. GO BLU!!!

No problem. BTW, nice setup you got there!

I'm somewhat concerned that there's something wrong with the way you're burning the disc. Everyone here who has used Nero or Roxio to master the disc from the .jp mastered firmware has been successful.

Also, just so you know, the earlier 1.2 firmware for the DBD30 (and the firmware releases for the BD10) followed a similar pattern: released on the .jp site first... eventually the EXACT SAME file gets posted on the US site. Until that happens, the tech support people have absolutely no idea that a new firmware even exists.

1.3 works perfect on my BD30 and another one I upgraded. I don't know what the problem is.

Well, I only tried the update for 1.2 and it did not work. I followed all the steps on the download page three times and each time the message displayed on screen was disc not recognized. I will try the later releases and see if those work.

I can't believe this thread still exists. Can a mod please change the title of the thread to something a little more accurate and less incendiary, like "Don't install 3rd Party Software"? Thanks.

Don't mess with the directions (on either the American or Japanese site). I know it's counterintuitive, but the player needs the disc to be properly formatted and finalized and using the built-in Windows CD-burning software often doesn't accomplish that properly. Use Nero or Roxio. Create a standard data disc. Copy the file to the disc. Hit burn. And you'll have a perfect disc.

Here, here. While we're at it, can we move it to the right forum? Since everyone's discussing Blu-ray settop players here, not Blu-ray PC Drives, it really should be in the players forum.

I was able to successfully download and install the firmware update to 1.3 for the BD30K. For some reason, my player would not accept 1.2 (however, it looks like 1.2 is included in the 1.3 update). I will try Roxio next time I run into trouble. Thanks for your help.
