If it doesnt sell on here, go to ebay.
FYI. The going price for a new RX-V 661 is $379-$399 online right now with free shipping.

If THX was overblown, it would have been gone by now. Many others have tryed to replace it, and it isn't free....

and if you don't want instant obsolete, forget the optical, HDMI is here to stay and all new audio formats go thru it

I replaced my Sony w/Onkyo 705 and am now shopping for a 905 to replace my yammer hammer

...Could only find that price range from off name websites. Even Amazon is at $500. (so the going rate is roughly $500. If you want to press your luck with no name websites...good luck with that.)

Most of these responses have been directed to the OP. He would benefit huge by going with the 605 since he's not using an HDMI capable receiver at present. There very well might not be a point to this switch for people with other receivers. Depends on what you're switching from.

Default One Question for You All

Hi, I am a bit new to the HD Audio stuff (been doing HD Video for as long as it was available) and ran into the same issues mentioned. I have a great Sony 40 inch Bravia XBR LCD HD TV and had been using a Denon DVD that upconverted to 1080i with my old Harmon Kardon receiver outputing the Dolby 5.1 audio to the receiver over Toslink.

I just upgraded to the Samsung 1400 Blue Ray, upgraded the firmware and have been grooving on the 1080P HD until a few days ago when I encountered my first BD that had the HD DTS only and my receiver could not decode it over Bitstream so I was forced to change the BD player output to PCM for that movie. I thought I was going to go out and buy the Onkyo 605 and then realized I could output the audio from the BD player's 6 channel analog outputs to the receivers 6 channel inputs! It now once again sounds great, I can choose the Dolby DTS HD Master option on the player and I am getting all six channels with the same excellent seperation and sound from all six speakers that I was accustomer to.

The question I have for all you who understand this better than me is this.

Is there a reason to upgrade to a new receiver like the Onkyo to get the HD DTS over HDMI? I am happy with six speakers and don't think the rear center is that important to me but after investing in the new TV and BD Player, I do want to get the most possible from the new components, so what do you all think.

Thanks for taking a moment to share your thoughts and Happy Holidays.

Jack

I'm not 100% on this, but I thought that the full DTS HD track, in it's fullest glory, must run through either HDMI or COAX DIGITAL. Otherwise, the receiver is actually downconverting the signal and losing detail/power.

I have a bit of an odd question. I convinced my mom and brothers to chip in on a PS3 for my dad. He has a 7 year old Mitsubishi rear projection tv (WS55711) but this only has component video in (1080i). Is it possible to send everything to a receiver (he's looking at the Onkyo TX-SR605 or 705) via HDMI, then send the video signal to the tv via component out? That way he can take advantage of the lossless codecs? I would just try it myself on my new 605, but I won't be home until mid January... Thanks

Yes.

My father has an older Mitsubishi with only Component inputs and a PS3. Yes you can run video via component and audio via HDMI from the PS3. And my father also has the Onkyo 605.
