Wouldn't it make more sense for Japanese people to prefer smaller-sized releases? I don't imagine they have a whole lot of room to store things.

From what I've heard the majority important anime from outside of Japan because it is really expensive to buy them in Japan. So I guess the box size doesn't matter to them.

I don't think the majority import their anime. Some certainly do, and it's something their companies are scared shitless of, which is why we get delays and otherwise get screwed on our releases.

Few Japanese actually buy anime on discs. Selling 10,000 copies is considered good, I believe (BoA knows everything about this).

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2013-07-26 (Last question. He's also covered the topic multiple times. Sadly searching for this stuff when he did 3-4 questions an article is pretty hard (which is why there's now only one article a question every few days instead of 3-4 every Friday. First of those.))

Also something to keep in mind, rental shops are still huge in Japan, and the Japanese in general do not care that much about having large home video libraries (especially with their smaller homes). Physical media is much more expensive there in general for that reason, so it's not just anime, though anime is much more expensive than the other stuff.

In order of importance (for me):
  1. Accurate subtitles (no dubtitle BS)
  2. Recomposition as opposed to just upscaling old shows (like Gurren Lagann)
  3. Cleanup and adding of frames for subpar TV broadcasts (like Bakemonogatari or JoJo S1)
  4. Good extras and specially making-of features (like Paprika, Redline, or GKids releases of Ghibli movies)
  5. Solid compression and bitrate (like AoA releases and most Disney-released Ghibli films)
  6. Elegant and compact packaging (a standard slip with classy artwork should be enough like newer Discotek releases)
  7. Affordable (I'm ok paying more for anime than for regular TV shows or movies, but AoA pricing feels like robbery to me when compared to other forms of entertainment)
