I picked this up today at Best Buy, it was "on sale" for under $22. As I've mentioned earlier in this thread and elsewhere, I've watched a few scattered episodes of the animated series on Netflix and while there's occasionally interesting episodes, the general pacing of the series doesn't hold my interest for the long haul.
Thus, this was kind of a risk buy as I wasn't sure I was going to like the live action version at all. Going in, it's not perfect, the story gets a bit silly regarding a couple key characters in the last 3rd of the movie and when people start sproinging around buildings to kill Titans like jet-pack sporting Spider-Men, it doesn't quite translate well to "live action." However, the overall very creepy element of the giant zombie-like Titans munching on humans like Snickers bars every chance they get makes for a few really disturbing set pieces. I don't know how many more times I'll watch this in the coming months, but I'm intrigued enough that I'll pick up the 2nd part in Dec. |

Just FYI you have to redeem the digital copy through their website and both the Japanese and English versions unlock. Mine unlocked in VUDU, but I couldn't redeem on vudu's website.

Does it say digital copy on the sleeve because the one at Walmart does not. I'm just wondering if it has the digital copy inside even though it's not listed on the sleeve at Walmart.

Is this the movie or Anime?
I liked the anime but to me it had 1 big flaw. Too many flashbacks. Seems like half of every episode was made up of flashbacks. Maybe I wasnt paying close enough attention but it doesnt explain the origins of the Titans or how humans were able to defeat them the first time. Last edited by brps3; 10-10-2016 at 10:35 PM. |

Yes, too many flashbacks Titan origin hasn't been explained yet. Technically, they didn't/never defeated the titans. They ran and hid. |

I bought this over the weekend and watched it, it was ok. If you have watched the anime it's worth a watch but unless you're a completest owning it isn't really necessary.
Also, I did redeem my digital code and like everyone else I had to go to Funimation and it then sent me to VUDU. Which is odd considering I couldn't redeem it on VUDU |

I hear it's crap. However, I would've purchased it anyway, if it was the 3D version. Why no 3D edition?

Okay, having watched Part 1 I have to say I'm squarly in the middle camp. I have watched the AoT anime, not read the Manga, and played some of the recent video game. My love of 3D maneuver gear knows few limits (eat it Spidey).
This movie is just different enough to stay interesting. And IMO it's world is honestly more interesting then the original. With wreckage of the old world peppered among the agrarian fantasy elements. Makes it feel far more post-apoc. And it makes super-tech like Omni-Directional Movement gear make more sense IMO. Also great live action environments to place your action and drama sequences in. Camera work is great throughout, definitely makes it feel like a high budget Hollywood flick. Special effects are also, top tier. Toho's still the king of practical effects, with actors really shining through as the Titans, instead of just being CGI creatures. Great puppet usage too on the Colossal Titan and [Show spoiler] . Live action titans are probably the highlight of the whole movie.Disappointing that the 3D Maneuver Gear is the actual downside of this movie. As its used sparingly and doesn't look great when in action. Obviously this is down to difficulty in making it look good in live action I assume. They do try to cover it up with some non-swinging weapon play from the humans, bow & arrow, a big ass poleaxe, etc... It mostly works. Story wise, things are generally pretty good. With it drawing its plot pretty liberally from the anime arcs. Melding them into a single arc, to decent results. Some cliche romance stuff kinda shoves its way in (Evagelion influences maybe?), which is kind of distracting. But overall the movie is deliciously nihilistic, as the best parts of AoT generally are. I give it a solid B+ overall, and look forward to both Part 2, and Shin Godzilla. |
