The 2-D Hondo Blu-Ray was released in June of 2012. It's easy to point a finger at Paramount now, but you have to understand that Warner's hadn't even released Dial M For Murder on 3-D Blu-Ray yet. Before Dial M, no Golden Age 3-D title was ever released on 3-D Blu-Ray. It was an untested market and Paramount wasn't eager to dip it's toes into it yet. Hopefully, they'll change their mind and release it on 3-D Blu-Ray.

The 3D in Friday the 13th 3D, from the sample I saw, is very impressive as far as strong 3D layering and pop outs. Really hope this happens.

BLMN, I once personally heard Chris J. Condon, the inventor of StereoVision and the man behind important 3-D titles like The Stewardesses and Rottweiler, remark that in his view, Friday the 13th Part III was the best-looking 3-D film of the early 1980s. This was at a single-strip 3-D retrospective in L.A. in 2002.
The last time I saw F13III on the big screen was at an anniversary screening in Hollywood some years later. Martin Jay Sadoff was there-- as was Harry Manfredini, incidentally. The show was delayed for a long time while they got the lens set up on the projector, and the presentation was frankly imperfect. But even so, I thought to myself then (and still think now) that Condon was probably right. But you know what? Now I think of it, I should wait until I actually have a stereoscopic Blu-Ray in my hands before making predictions of what the final results will look like !!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

As great as Jaws 3D though with less extreme, uncomfortable shots that go beyond the reasonable limits of 3D from the clips I've seen anyway. In fairness, Jaws 3D has mostly great 3D pop outs much of the time. But for extreme 3D, I'm thinking of the close up shot of the mangled face in Jaws 3D and the pole sticking out of the screen beyond the human ability to blend the dual image into one object. As Bavanut/Mike mentions though, we'll know for certain after we have the blu ray 3D of Friday the 13th 3D and can watch the entire movie.
The following Pop out reel of clips from the film I found on youtube, reveal a lot of spoilers for the movie, but really shows off the daring filmed 3D of Friday the 13th 3D, if you have a 3DTV or 3D display set up to see what it could like like on blu ray 3D if and when that happens hopefully. On a side note, I could not bare to watch Jaws 3D. Too strong and too extreme 3D, unwatchable IMHO. Even worse than those two Sammy animation movies, those also seem to out of boundaries of what the human eye can handle regarding 3D. |

Yeah, I found that SBS Friday the 13th 3D and it's not bad. I think it's from a Japanese laserdisc. The quality is obviously not terrific, but I prefer watching that over the anaglyph DVD or Blu simply because even if the picture is kind of messy, it's at least more accurate color-wise. And the 3D is terrific. A shiny new 3D Blu of this movie would be eagerly anticipated by pretty much all of us.

The problem with Jaws 3D is not the amount of depth or pop-outs, it's how poorly it was shot. Blurry, murky visuals and pops-outs that are simply too close to the camera and out of focus. |

Reading up on how VHD did 3D: "Two parallel images were recorded, on alternate frames, and the discs played at double-speed.", I can't imagine the work needed to translate that to SBS, if such a thing were possible, especially when you'd get much much better results, higher quality in the proper aspect ratio, using the old DVD master (L eye) paired with the Blu-ray master (R eye). This is more down to what an individual can handle rather than across the board being too strong for what the human eye can process. I had no problem with either Sammy movie or Jaws 3D but I can totally see how some would.

There are a few poorly done shots in Jaws 3D but for the most part I thought it was well shot considering the technological limitations of the time and the difficulties of underwater shooting.

Well, Jaws and the Sammy movies are beyond my personal 3D boundaries then.
![]() Watched that Friday III 3D clip form youtube yesterday and while it's obviously not perfect (picture seems a bit off in the background, like the two images are not corresponding or something like that), the pop out effects look really cool. Can only imagine what an official 3D release would look like... |

If you're interested in F13th Part 3 and the 3D for that film, I recommend checking out the documentary Crystal Lake Memories about the entire Friday series. They have a good segment regarding the 3D shoot for Part 3, seems like they really cared how they framed things and got quite creative in many scenes to make it work.

The NWave 3D films are great examples of very strong 3D best enjoyed a bit further back from where you would normally sit for less potent 3D films, but yes, there are a couple shots in Jaws 3D that are uncomfortable to watch in 3D. Quote:

Yeah, I agree - I meant specifically the optical effects and pop-put effects which were mostly pretty poor in Jaws 3D. The actual 3D photography was fine though a bit uninspired. Several of those 80's films just shot the pop-put effects too close to the camera, so those shots would come off as out-of-focus and hard to merge with our eyes. The Sammy films, Thunder, and the Lichtmond films for example have extreme depth but they are all CGI and razor-sharp, so the 3D is comfortable to view ( for me anyways). It's when they stick something so close to the camera that it's out of focus that it doesn't work.

That's true that some preservation of the 3D is better than nothing since we're still unsure if Friday the 13th 3D will arrive on blu ray 3D. Hopefully we get some word soon. If not, write in to the rights owner and request it be on blu ray 3D asap.
