What about the disc if extras. Will they be ported over to the BD in the new set?

When will there be a review posted?

This will probably be the weakest looking film in the series on UHD. I believe this is a 2K DI while Catching Fire and Mockingjay 1 & 2 all have 4K DI. I'm not sure if I'm going to rebuy this series honestly, though I will go ahead and pull the trigger on Mockingjay 2 as I've passed on picking it up since it's been released.

Sicario is gorgeous. EX3 is putrid. I respect Lionsgate for jumping on the UHD train as quickly as they did but I wonder if it was too quickly, as they've clearly got a two-tier system when it comes to mastering their UHD titles - although as they ain't too hot when it comes to regular Blu-ray I can't say I'm surprised with their UHD snafus.

I know you've been involved with Lionsgate for a long time Cliff but goddamn, their mastering of Blu-ray in general has dropped off of a cliff (no pun intended) these last few years, the banding in Mockingjay Part 1 was scandalously bad. It's a shame because when it comes to special features they're a studio that still delivers excellent work (in no small part to folks like yourself) but when they lowball the main feature it smacks of putting the cart before the horse, y'know?

Any final word on, if Catching Fire does contain the IMAX switching scenes?

I hope not. I hate the switching of aspect ratio within a movie. After all, it's done as a gimmick for IMAX presentation and all the scenes in every movie have always been framed with 2.35:1 safe area

If true, this is bullsh!t!
The imax scene WAS the way the director wanted!

Normally that would be the case (I'd love to get Nolan's IMAX features in fixed widescreen) but Catching Fire's IMAX sequence was NOT shot with a safe area in mind, to the point where the 2.40 extraction is actually tilt-and-scanned to follow the action, effectively adding artificial camera moves complete with the same kind of ersatz motion blur that's added by such a process.

I found the 2.40 version of the IMAX sequence to be extremely distracting as a result, so I'm very disappointed that it won't be in 1.78 on the UHD. But if that's what Mr Lawrence wants then there's no arguing with that....I just hope that Lionsgate put their A team on the case when encoding these for UHD.

So you know better than the director even though LG asked the director? Ok then..

I think using IMAX (as in, 15/70) in the first place kinda went against the spirit of the books (I think I'm right in saying that Gary Ross refused to go 3D on the first one for the same reason) and Lawrence was right to go back to a fixed ratio for the last two, but that still doesn't change how hinky the fixed aspect version of CF looks to me. I'll just have to suck it up, if I ever get them on UHD that is (anxiously waiting for proper reviews on these!).

Do the UHDs contain any of the various retailer exclusive extras, Cliff?

This is exactly what I'm doing too. Just adding Mockingjay Part 2 since I never picked up the Blu-ray edition. The rest I'll keep on Blu

So it appears if we are upgrading from the 4-Film Blu-ray Collection, the only thing we are loosing is the bonus material on the extra disc (but we gain a new audio commentary on Hunger Games). I wish they could have included the new bonus material from the 4-Film Collection spread across each UHD release.

That sucks about no alternating aspect ration in Catching Fire on the UHD disc. That was always one of my favorite things about the Blu-ray edition. The studios should realize that once you make something available on one edition, you shouldn't then remove it on future editions. Just pisses people off.
