Ted, Blu-rays are encoded to rec. 709 & the PS3 outputs it via HDMI when playing Blu-rays

Laser TV is RPTV pt 2, as we all know, current bulb is short life span stuff, Laser TVs will be as good as current LCD/PLASMA panels, you will also see them be slimmer than before & not expensive as you think but actually affordable like 60" for sub $2000

I don't know all about this technology, but I know something about lasers. The potential here is good, at least in theory. Mixing three-color laser beams can produce awesome colors. They have made large format laser prints of color film for ages and when done right the colors look great. I'm not sure how they would get deep blacks on a TV screen, but it worked in the still photos. Extremely high resolution is another theoretical advantage.

Drawbacks? One speck of dust in a beam's path can really screw up a picture with multiple interference patterns. The beam would have to be projected in a vacuum to avoid this.

Dunno. Maybe... we'll see.

I have pets, is there any danger toward them from this TV? I mean, as it is if I use a laser pointer they go just insane trying to catch it. What are the odds of them doing it to my TV?

No more than they would with an LCD or Plasma. The light hits a screen.

That is correct. You need the xvYCC colorspace:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XvYCC

Since there will probably never be deep color xvYCC Blu-Ray movies (not enough storage space and MOST importantly, not enough bandwidth) the new Laser HTDV's color range will probably be of very little use.

It's very nice in theory, and i'm sure they will have some very nice hard drive based source material to showcase the new color range at tradeshows... but the benefits will not translate to our livingrooms. The eye will be the test: you take the 60" Kuro vs. the 60" Laser TV with both of them playing Ratatouille on identical model Blu-Ray players and you will have your answer as to which is better.

Another thing to measure about this new technology will be Motion Resolution (one of the huge advantages of Plasma vs. LCD).

They're moving well beyond just RPTVs. Given that the company that developed the laser technology appears to be a small venture-backed Silicon Valley outfit it's highly doubtful they'd be moving into mass production unless they had some very legitimate customers.

how safe is a laser TV? I know there are warning labels on laser pointers, I'm now wearing glasses likely due to CRT monitor monitor burn-in from using the computer too much LCD is much easier on the eyes, and I'm just wonder is laserTV more like LCD in terms of safety, or like CRT?

I agree that Laser TV's may never see the light of day.

I've seen Laser TV in the lab and nothing compares to it with respect to PQ. The contrast, color, etc. are amazing with Laser TV. The difference is so dramatic it is like comparing a SD DVD to Blu-ray.

However I know reasons why this technology may not see the light of day unless a small miracle happens. That's really all I can say about it. I also know that some companies are working on releasing products in 08 (that may or may not actually happen). I hope for some good news about this subject this year at CES.

Well, my next TV upgrade won't be for another year and change atleast, but when that time comes, I'll see what choices there are.

Well, I'll wait for Carbon Nanotube TV's...theoretically these could be something out of this world entirely...

Default LASER TV good to go in 08!

G'day all,

Sounds awesome. Can't wait to see these new T.V. sets and what they can do. I know that the article didn't mention Sony but do you guys think they'll come out with one of these new T.V. sets around the same time as Samsung or any of the other major CE companies?

I also saw a demo of a small laser projector (like 2” X 3”). This projector is capable of connecting to say an iPod video or cell phone and would display DVD quality video to a wall or screen. I heard that the price point would have been around $300 for this cool projector.

One demo I saw was a side by side comparison of a brand new Sharp Aquos 52" LCD and a prototype Laser TV. Both TV’s were fed the same HD signal. High level people were flown in to see the demo and they accused the Laser TV folks of tampering with the LCD because the LTV was so much better in PQ when compared to the Sharp. Everyone thought the LCD was either badly calibrated or somehow defective. A Sharp tech was called in to check the calibration and overall setup of the LCD and everything was fine. There was nothing wrong with the LCD; it’s just that LCD is an inferior technology when compared to Laser. And that was a tough pill for me to swallow because I am a huge LCD fan. I do think that the latest LCD product is closer to what Laser TV looked like last year.

One other thing about Laser: I was told that Laser TV was very repairable. There are 3 lasers in the TV (Red/Green/Blue). If one of the lasers breaks it is relatively easy to swap out the bad laser and adjust the new one.

Finally, this technology is very safe. So we can stop the plans to give this technology to the HD DVD fanboys and keep it for ourselves (if it actually reaches the marketplace).

Yeah, and with all the 1080i players they have, they won't need such a good TV anyways cuz it "looks pretty much the same" to them compared to 1080p

yes love the fact people think they have 1920x1080 when they really have x600 (lcd) or x800 (plasmas)something

Another great advantage when dealing with laser beams is that they are always sharp and focused. Calibration is little or no issue in that respect. I seriously doubt that they would have to be recalibrated after installation from being moved around like so many conventional RP sets.
