Call me crazy...but I'm afraid to buy anything on regular bluray anymore - part of me wonders why 4K discs aren't getting day one releases...and I'd rather not do double dips on new releases. I guess there's always the case that 4K isn't catching on...Ah, 1st world problems!

I have seen a number of films this year and have only voted 5 out of 5 for two films so far; Hacksaw Ridge and Hell or High Water. In fact, there have been years when there were no 5 out of 5's for me. This is a definite day one purchase for me.

Closer to the mark is that it somehow doesn't pencil out for Lionsgate to master a title for 4k UHD BD release that didn't gross "bigly." According to Box Office Mojo, the pic's budget was $12M and it grossed $27M. So it doesn't quite make sense. The movie was a critical success. Here's hoping that we're just in the middle of a six-month delay due to additional required HDR pass and mastering time and, especially with some awards season buzz, the pic will see a UHD BD in the spring. I've put in a message to Bill Hunt about this. If anyone hears something substantive on this, please post word. Last edited by Paul.R.S; 11-11-2016 at 04:28 PM. |

Saw it last night finally.
Enjoyed it, but by the end it felt cut short and slightly derivative to me narratively. Something others had also that I hoped wasn't the case. Characters and the story weren't fleshed out enough mostly. I didn't care as much as the film went on. And I wanted to. It was like it wanted to be both kind of a gunslinger exploitation thriller and also a nuanced drama. A cool combination for sure, but those two elements felt like they were pulling apart from each other rather than working together. But the acting and lensing is definitely solid. And it's by far my favorite Ben Foster performance to date. |

I had a Sony 75" 94XD and I now have a 65" JS9500. When I have done comparisons between the 4K and blu-rays of quite a few films I have been unable to spot any significant differences between them. Exodus, Batman Vs Superman, Deadpool, to name a few. I'm not saying it doesn't look good, just it's not that much better that I can see an obvious difference. |

Just suggesting that HDR implementation in one's display is going to be key in maximizing UHD BD PQ. Just from my reading, I'm most skeptical about your saying that there's purportedly little to no difference between the 1080 and 4k BDs of Deadpool. That disc was a major priority/HDR showcase title for the Fox Innovation Lab. http://www.highdefdigest.com/tags/sh...innovation-lab Quote:

To be fair the difference is going to depend eyesight, TV and room size, settings, the movie, calibration and a ton of other things. The upgrade being worth it is going to be a vastly subjective thing, just like DVD to BD was, as baffling as that is to me.
And that's before we even begin on how divisive HDR can be. |
