Instead, we went straight from DVD to 1080i and 1080p blu-ray. So, in this situation, it's straight from 1080p to 4k, and it's not as if 8k is just about to arrive, and is being readied as the basis for yet another physical format.

And as has been noted previously in this thread, anything beyond 4k resolution is arguably redundant on the size of screens you might expect to see in the home environment.

I think 32K could be a winner but don't ask me why. As for Ultra HD, all in good time, but I'm not paying £3000 for something that's not fully spec'd.

I wouldn't bet on 8k on a physical format ever becoming a thing. Streaming 8k with a 100mb connection maybe?

As easy as it is to just mentally write it off at this point, in a decade there could be a big use for 8K resolution. Someone has already mentioned sports and concerts benefiting from it, and there's the 3D factor as well; one of the big pushes in 3D technology is for glasses no longer being needed. The only problem is even with 4K, the resolution isn't enough to handle that just yet. Still, this is easily a decade or more away so I'm going to enjoy 4K for the time being.

Why do people always worry so much about the next format? Just enjoy what you have right now. I'm still amazed by the picture quality of regular blu-ray. Many releases are so good, I almost feel like I own the actual film reel. I haven't even given much thought to 4K, let alone 8K.

8K and higher could certainly be used plenty in the future, but an extremely small number of movies that currently exist can benefit from 8K. The movies made in 2030 may look great in 8K, but very few movies made from 1900 to 2020 can get any better than 4K (and many can barely be upgraded from 1080p).

Therefore I can be pretty confident that the vast majority of movies I buy on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray will never get a better version even if the movies made in the future are 8K, 16K, 32K, or higher.

When 4k first came out I was solidly in the "wait for 8k" camp, but then 4k blus came out and made me change my mind. Like others have said, I have huge doubts about 8k media being a thing since true 4k is already so scarce. Sure they are broadcasting special events like the Olympics in 8k, but beyond that who is going to bother?

They need to get 4K UHD discs looking their best, before dropping 8K on us.

Stop the money grab and give us QUALITY 4K releases.

I cannot wait until UHD is as mature as BD is now. There are some stunning BDs coming out the last few years. So far UHDs been a joke (as expected in the beginning).
These 2K DI upscales are crap..

Heh. The industry joke when Gone with the Wind was scanned at 8K was that it was already reaching the microbial level.

Some of you jest about higher quality but 8k is already available.

Here is a 8k TV, if you own 4k its already obsolete guys & gals.

What I am doing is not for the bulk of people because someone has to pay for the advancements in technology. But I guesstimate that it will only be three-years before 8k TV's come to europe & movies offer 8k+4k+BR combi discs. You can please of course gloat about the superior quality of owning a 4k hdr/dv television & I can be content that 8k is where my next movie collection will be focused. We shall see what sort of time-frame plays out together. Whilst I am also going to put forth VR is going to be the next 3dee-flop gimmick.

I repeat. 4K was was "available" before 1080P was even normal.

The formats always overlap, and they always will in future generations. We're probably still a good 5 - 10 years away from a regular consumer being able to walk into a Best Buy and buy an 8K tv, far far longer than said average consumer keeps their tvs.

It's also telling, and humorous, that you call 3D a "flop" when almost every 4K tv above the most basic low-end models are 3D, and more movies are being released in 3D now than at any point in the past.
