Wind is what I was going to recommend. It is about the true story of the US losing the America's Cup and getting it back. It is also released by Columbia/Tri Star so Sony can serve us up a Blu edition. I still have this gem on laserdisc.

One I can really reccommend is "The Riddle of the Sands" - 1979 Michael York, Jenny Agutter et al. Unfortunately there is not a decent version available even on DVD. There is also a version available on VHS .

However over Xmas `Film Four' showed a version which looks to be from a new transfer (it was 16:9 as opposed to all previous versions at 4:3 pan and scan). So there may be a DVD on the way. Hopefully the new transfer was done in HD and a Blu might be on offer at some time .

Excellent film, though perhaps a little British for other territories, though the story is by an Irishman.

Edit:
Just thought of another good one... Captains Courageous - 1937 Spencer Tracey et al. Excellent shots (B&W) of genuine American Fishing Schooners in the Grand banks area.

Utvandrarna, (The Emigrants) 1971, with Liv Ullmann & Max von Sydow, dir. Jan Troell ~ but also look at part 2, Nybyggarna (The New Land) though there are no sailing ships in The New Land there is a stern-wheeler.

But having seen the "true-story" Mel Gibson/Anthony Hopkins "Bounty" version, you won't want to bother with the lesser two...Rent immediately.

(Forget that Hannibal cartoon-character, Hopkins rules any movie where he can play insecure authority figures watching their control crumble--Think "Nixon" and "Titus" on the high seas.)

Also, Das Boot. An all time classic.

Not really about sailing, although it has everyhting to do with the sea. Honorable mentions are U-571 and Crimson Tide.

G, I'm upset you felt that needed to be mentioned! That one is obvious! One of my favorite films. Now Wolfgang Petersen does stuff like Troy. Sheesh.

Sorry about mentioning Das Boot, I didn't realize that others would like that one too.

You're sort of right about Wolfgang though. Even though I kind of liked Troy although I'm not sure I would've given the lead role to Brad Pitt, to me his recent movies have decreased in quality a bit. I really liked In the Line of Fire and Outbreak, but than he came out with Air Force One and The Perfect Storm and they just didn't do it for me. I hope he can regain his former glory.

Other names come to mind, though I don't recommend them as purchases. Better to read the books (I had to read them in school and then see the movies. It would have been better to see the movies first because compared to the books the movies are a disappointment.)

Billy Bud (1962)

Two Years Before the Mast

and for that matter, Moby Dick

Again, Windjammer is the one to see, especially if there's ever a chance to see it in restored color. This ship (SS Christian Radich) is real, not a soundstage set, not a mock-up, not a model floating in a tub, not a digital effect. The voyage is real, the waves are real, the storms are real. For someone interested in sailing ships, this it.
