I'm working on my list and I'm having trouble deciding whether Shusuke Kaneko's Gamera and Godzilla films qualify. Kaneko's movies are fairly unique in the kaiju genre in that, while most such films are predominantly sci-fi, his deal very heavily with the supernatural; prophecies, gods, spirits, magic and what have you. At the same time though, there is an element of sci-fi in there as well, so I think they can count in the same way Star Wars for example does.

I wouldn't disallow them, all Godzilla films are certainly eligible. I don't remember much of Gamera, but from what I read there's at least a little something involving genetic engineering.

If there's anything I'd question, it would be Rebirth of Mothra or any King Kong movie.

I think it's speculative enough. It's definitely a mind-bending twist on how one perceives social realities, and by extension I think that makes it valid sci-fi.
