I would probably pick a company like LG over them (Funai makes the Philips UHD players) but it is nice to see affordable DV players hitting the market.

Correct, Dolby Vision will come as an upgrade soon after the end of February release of the UP970. From what I'm told DV will work from UHD DV BD discs as well as streamed content. I'll be testing everything the moment our allocation arrives

LG has now posted an info page on LG.com.

Robert, any info on if it for sure supports DTS-X and Dolby Atmos? I can't image that it won't but the site doesn't mention it.

I'm torn on if I should buy the LG or pay the extra for the Oppo. I have the k8500 now and want to get a player that will support Dolby Vision. I know Oppo has a very good reputation but I'm not sure if it's worth the $250 price difference. Never having owned either Oppo or LG players I really have nothing to base a choice on....

I believe LG's UP970 UHD/HDR BD player supports DTS-X and Dolby Atmos, but I'll double check and get back.

The sooner we get a full app lineup, the better. As well and confirmation of the big 3 in DV: Netflix, Amazon, and VUDU.

If that comes in this deck it could change my device intentions majorly. Especially since Nvidia dropped the ball on DV in the new Shield TV.

Hey Robert,

LG has a page up for this player: http://www.lg.com/us/home-video/lg-U...lu-ray-players

It's a pretty basic placeholder so far. But on it, they use the term "Multi-HDR". Do you know what they mean by this? I'm assuming it means HDR10 plus Dolby Vision.

Someone asked this on AVS, and I'm curious too, if this player also includes an HDR to SDR converter like the Panasonics and Oppo?

Thanks!

Cool sounding player. Think I'll pick this one up when it comes out.

I already own the Samsung 8500, but I like that this new LG player supports Dolby Vision even though my TV doesn't.

I might move the LG 4K TV and Samsung 8500 I already have into the bedroom and buy a new TV that supports Dolby Vision sometime in 2017, with this LG player.

Thinking about getting this for the DV. Is the Oppo going to be worth the $250-300 premium over this? Probably not for my needs.

@riptor3076...Home Theater Review does mention about Dolby Atmos. HTR article below:

BTW Mr. riptor3076, are you a "Killer Instinct" fan, by chance?

Most BD players do not decode audio they rely on the receiver or TV to do that. It's a non issue as the audio content is passed along natively so the heavy lifting is done by the TV or receiver.

Just got confirmation that LG's UP970 does support DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby Atmos audio and can also down-convert HDR to SDR.

Kris Deering recently reported that HDR 2020 to SDr 709 conversion was actually in the UHD spec, which is nice, so I would assume we should see all players with it since the math and map to doing it is there. I notice the Sony mentions it as well.

That's true. All the current players can convert to SDR if connected to a 4k SDR TV or a 1080p TV. I guess I was thinking of the special HDR to SDR conversions that Oppo and Panny have where you can keep the BT.2020 colorspace while still converting to HDR to SDR. Is that the type of conversion they confirmed, Robert? Or the basic HDR to SDR? Sorry if I wasn't more clear in my original request.

The SDR BT2020 takes work and special sauce, no roadmap for it. I doubt most manufacturers are gonna mess with that.

When I asked LG's new product development exec about HDR to SDR conversion I specified with WCG and the answer was yes.

Hi Robert,

This will not at all be a deal-breaker, but I just wanted to know if you can verify DTS:X (or a DTS:X firmware upgrade sometime) for the LG UP970 UHD BD player.

Thanks....

Wouldn't that just work if you sent all audio as Bitstream to your AV Receiver? I was under the impression that you don't need a player to decode the audio, just a capable receiver to.
