Also to lump all thse different mediums into "otaku genre" is not only incredibly lazy, but incredibly ignorant, especially when you call it a genre. It's not a genre! You'e combining four different mediums and calling it all a genre.
But lots of anime are based on light novels. Baccano!, Haruhi Suzumiya, Vampire Hunter D, etc, etc.

What has that got to do with anything? Lots of novels have been adapted into comics in the west as well. Are we gonna call the Twilight movies comic book films? No, because we recognise that novels and comics are completely different narrative forms. They are fundamentally different mediums.

I genuinely don't trust anybody to get it right at all. Mainly because the anime characters are so visually distinct and have their arcs unfold over many episodes, that they don't even bother to try be as authentic as well as extending that into the casting choices. They also never nail the visuals of the world.

Dragonball is the most obvious example alongside Avatar: The Last Airbender.

One day, they may have photorealistic animated movies be able to be made and that would easily help bridge the two, but i don't trust them in live action at all.

One Piece worked out.

Cretton is a talented filmmaker. His action take was good with Shang Chi. Plus he understands character and drama. Just watch Short Term 12. It's unbelievable.

The point is more adapting a serial comic in film form is much, much harder than adapting it in serial TV series form. This isn't X-men, this is one loooooooooong story. They did a solid enough job with the Kenshin films, but even they just truncate the crap out of things until the original comic story is only vaguely shining through - and Naruto's story is about 2.5 times the size of Kenshin's.

I mean, it can be done, anything can be done with the right creative talent behind it... it's just a very daunting task!
