A total reboot will not work either, at least not with the hard core fans (think of Ghostbusters). A recast, maybe... But it's hard to picture anyone else playing the roles of these iconic characters. I think they need to do either a sequel or a spinoff with less major characters. |

As for this show, just do a spin-off with a new crew, and have the original characters show up when they can. Simple. |

I'd watch a reboot, continuation, or simply an alternate group in the universe. They did alot of cool world building that would interest me in seeing in any form. I would prefer as many of the originals used as possible but that could come in many forms.

I think the alternate group thing would be the best possible continuation for the series, other than perhaps a prequel. As much as it rushed the rest of the plot forward, I think that Serenity ended the story of those characters in a rough but satisfying manner.

I'm not seeing the original quote of what was actually said, but I suspect - as usual - that it's some little comment that was made being turned into this article which in turn has been turned into this semi-misleading thread title.
It sounds like Fox replied to a specific question and said they'd be willing to consider it, NOT that they ARE considering it. I read a few of the comics but stopped, as they just didn't capture the show for me. Same goes for Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse, etc. I just don't find comic books to be an effective medium to continue a television show, especially given the crap that passes for artwork in today's comic books. Of course I wish Firefly had continued and not been cancelled. But I'm content with the original series and the movie, short-lived and under-realized as they were. They closed the story, and I'd rather not have a new show in any shape or form, because it just wouldn't be the same. It's sad, but the time for Firefly has passed. Fox cancels everything, and Whedon has been fooled by them more times than most. "Fool me twice, shame on me." I don't see Whedon going back to them. For some reason, everyone is obsessed with reboots and remakes these days. Can't we move on and do something new? In the very unlikely event that Whedon and Fox put together a new Firefly in some form, of course I would check it out. But it seems impossible to re-capture the magic of the original, so it would need to be something very different. |

Brandon, I don't know what prompted Fox to announced this but they like the topic title says, they are simply considering bringing the series back but only if Joss Whedon helms the series. It's a smart move but that the plans all rest on Whedon's shoulders.
This might be the perfect time for Whedon to reboot the series and have it handled right, maybe add a few caveats before he agrees to do this. But, Fox does need to keep away from interfering with the series like they did with the original run, broadcasting the episodes out of order. |

The quoted article in the first post of this thread is mostly conjecture. Fox is not actively considering bringing back Firefly. The original news item came from a Rotten Tomatoes report on a TCA event, and it was simply a comment that was made, NOT an announcement of any kind. https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com...y-gotham-more/ RT's summary of what was actually said at the TCA event: Quote:

I agree 100%! All things must pass. So, time to move on. The Expanse is a series that seems to borrow a little from the Firefly/Blade Runner world. Though not related, there are some similar themes and character types. But, if Fox had to revisit Firefly, I would hope that it would be all new characters set in that world. Then, they could just have the remaining characters (from the original) show up from time to time in a guest role. Something more like what happened with Rogue One or Episode VII. ![]() |

Thing is, many studios mention that they want to bring back a series and this is the first time since that we've received confirmation that Fox Studios is seriously considering bring the series back, albeit with Joss Whedon as showrunner.
If this were reported by some unnamed blog, then we could easily dismiss it as wish fulfillment. But, since this information comes directly from Fox executives and they have announced a desire to bring the series back, this is good news. It's hilarious how some people can rain on our parade with their negativity (and, no, I didn't miss the irony there). ![]() |

Well, I think the smart way is to recast for a new series. It's probably the only way to do it. But, I do think that it should be a cast of unknown actors. It would probably be too cost prohibitive to bring back the original cast since most of them are doing their own projects.
