Big horror fan since I was a kid, even though most movies scared the crap out of me and I couldn't sleep for days.
Still watch a lot of horror both old and new school, ranging from Eurotrash like Buio Omega (Buried Alive, 1979) to the Poltergeist remake and everything in between. I could easily watch some obscure 70s Third World cannibal flick and after that watch the latest Hollywood horror remake/reboot/sequel. ![]() Big Argento fan from Bird till Opera, also Friday 1-6 and other 80s slashers, Evil Dead 1 and 2, Re-Animator, Demons, big fan of exorcism/possessions movies, I also love found footage, giallo and zombie movies. ![]() |

The slasher franchises are the lowest, most cash grab form of the horror film, so I don't understand why holding them above anything else would made you a "true" horror fan. The genre is capable of producing genuine masterpieces like Rosemary's Baby, Psycho, The Shining, Cat People, Suspiria, Alien, The Innocents and Don't Look Now, so as a lifelong horror fan these are the type of horror films I return to the most. Which is not to say that horror sequels can't be good films or fun, but the aren't the be and end all of horror.

Some horror fans like their horror to be sophisticated and "not full of that icky gory stuff" and some horror fans love to revel in the grue.
I personally see nothing wrong with that. What I do have an issue with is the occasional snobbery/elitism with some decisive films/franchises. |

I certainly consider myself a Horror fan, and a major one at that, but I don't really tend to latch onto franchises. I can't think of many that I love all the way through.
For instance: I only love the first three Halloween films, the first two Friday the 13th films, the first two Hellraiser films, the first two Nightmare films plus New Nightmare, only the first Evil Dead, only the first Candyman, only the first Texas Chain Saw (although it's been years since I've seen the second and third so maybe I'd feel differently nowadays), and I have similar feelings to the majority of other multi-installment franchises. I guess if I really think about it the only two franchises where I love each installment are the Child's Play and Alien series - excluding the elseworlds AvP nonsense, I love the five canon Alien installments nearly equally, with 1 & 3 being my favorites. Child's Play is just a fun series across the board. The more serious installments are spooky, and the more camp installments are funny (I find Seed in particular to be hilarious). And while they're not what you would necessarily call franchises, I am very partial toward a great many of the Universal Monster films, as well as the majority of Hammer's output. |

Yup, definitely. Had my first ever letter printed in the UK Film magazine 'Film Review' where I asked if David Cronenberg's Rabid, Shivers and The Brood were coming out on VHS anytime. I got told "no."
This was around 1989 when I was 15. Then went on to write horror reviews for my school magazine when I was 16, and subsequently contributed to an online horror website splatterhouse.net, sadly now defunct. Don't really have a favourite franchise. Modern films, I love the intricate plotting and over-the-top gore/trap set ups of Saw, and the Final Destination series is great fun (if you ignore the travesty that is part 4). Also a fan of Romero's 'Dead' series, and of course the Evil Dead trilogy. |

Personally, I don't like modern Slasher Movies at all (they are boring and predictable, sometimes ridiculous), neither I like the modern "supernatural" genre a-la Ring and crap like that.
If something, I absolutely adore the Phibes movies (they are pure genius), and Horror b-flicks from the Eighties (Creepshow 1 and 2, for instance). I would like to collect old Hammer films: one day I will do that. ![]() Quote:

Universal Classics, Hammer Films, Bug Eyed Monsters from the 50's, Vincent Price in the 60's, the Satanic 70's, John Carpenter in the 80's, Neo-noir in the 90's... It all intrigues me.
The Thing (82) and Alien are my favorite movies. Hellraiser and Exorcist (1&3) as well. I'm all over the Classic Horror Film Board and recommend it to horror buffs. |

Thank you, Klein.
I must say that ALL Romero's zombie movies are absolutely wonderful and astonishing. I also mean Land, Diary and Survival - they are superb. They are just the best. The love towards "The Walking Dead" is absolutely beyond me. ![]() |

Guess I'm not a "true" horror fan because I have a low tolerance for the crappy stuff most "true" horror fans build a cult around (and I totally positively don't get Italian horror). It's hard to answer your question about favorite franchises because even the most interesting ones have mediocre installments, like Rec, Halloween and Paranormal Activity.

I love Horror, but especially when it is "beautiful" to look at. I love a good spooky yarn that is photographed, lit, and colored well. Creepshow, Suspiria, Salem's Lot, the Omen, the work of Del Toro, Carpenter, Mario Bava, Hammer, Universal...
When you've got a director that understands composition, photography, lighting, and yes, musical score too, you end up with what I think is the most important element of a great horror film: Atmosphere When those ingredients to combine to make something eerie yet beautiful to look at, the art transcends the sum of its parts. That's the kind of horror I like. |
