Sounds interesting!

I've noticed the articles in your website's write-up actually invalidate the IMBb tech stats - that site states it was 1.85:1 and mono when the materials you've provided make it clear it was 1.66:1 and multi-channel.

Yes, IMDB is filled with errors. They once had three-panel Cinerama film titles with a 3.99:1 AR!

Out of curiosity, is this soundtrack three or four channel?

Thanks Bob. So in 1940, Disney's animated Fantasia was the first theatrical release to offer multi channel optical sound. Good to know, thanks.

In checking out 3DFilmArchive's website section on "Cease Fire" I was amazed on the amount of promotion and advertising materials Bob put together! I think there was more for that film than all the other films on that site put together! Well, maybe almost.

Yes. I was thinking how long it must take to assemble and post all of those informative articles and images together on the 3-D Film Archives site. Definitely an investment of time for a historical cause.

Thank you very much!

Truth be told, you're seeing literally decades of research and collection of material on the website. Ted Okuda is a great writer and made sense of the reams of research on the film.

We're always happy to share.

Indeed, it is staggering to see such an assemblage of material for a movie that was barely a blip on my radar! It amazes me how a film can generate all of that and then still slip through the cracks and fall into relative obscurity.

I suppose that can happen when you don't have name actors or director, and a war just isn't especially known for producing important films, at least not in the same sense that WW2 and Vietnam have.

In restored 3-D it should find a whole new audience.

Yes, looking forward to seeing Cease Fire in 3D, and how each shot was framed with 3D in mind. From what I read, the use of real soldiers definitely makes it unique, this being a semi-documentary style film.

One of the articles stated that most of the action scenes were filmed first on location in Korea, before the war ended in 1953. That must have been a tense filming experience. Looking forward to the scene with the jets on the air carrier too.

These featured troops were pulled from combat to work on the historical film. I see one of them, Ricardo, was later killed in the line of duty in real life after going back to the war.

CEASE FIRE was held over in 3-D for a second week at all three theatres. After that, it opened in 3-D at a number of other theatres in the area, including the UA and Valley in Pomona and the Imperial in Long Beach.

Here's the closing day ad from the LA Times, January 26, 1954.

iirc,The newspaper ads for my local theatres said "Planet 51" is being shown in 3D ,even days after I attended. (the ads at the theatre itself definitely said it was).

However, when I attended, there was a written notice at the theatre saying that it is NOT being shown in 3D.

It was never shown in 3D there at all nor in any other theatre that I'm aware of.

I can see how they came up with that Cinerama estimate. "It's three 35mm film strips right? So 1.33:1 x 3 = 3.99:1! That must be it!"

Presumably without actually looking at any Cinerama stills to realize how ridiculous that is.

"Abel Gance wrote, produced, directed and acted in the film.
Polyvision is the name that French film critic Émile Vuillermoz gave to a specialised widescreen film format devised exclusively for the filming and projection of Gance's Napoléon.[10] It involves the simultaneous projection of three reels of silent film arrayed in a horizontal row, making for a total aspect ratio of 4:1 (3× 1.33:1)."

"Director Abel Gance was worried that the film's finale would not have the proper impact by being confined to a small screen. Gance thought of expanding the frame by using three cameras next to each other. This is probably the most famous of the film's several innovative techniques.[12] Though American filmmakers began experimenting with 70mm widescreen (such as Fox Grandeur) in 1929, widescreen did not take off until CinemaScope was introduced in 1953."

I've got Napoleon on VHS. A classic with indeed an innovative technique for its day.
