That is literally the case. I guess the movie was very popular with the users of the Korean equivalent of Tumblr (lots of fan art and whatnot). I believe the distributor asked PCW if an Extended Cut could be made, and so he cut together the longer version.

WRONG! It's not just scenes added, obviously there are, but it's more than that. Scenes are moved that change it quite dramatically (won't go into details for spoilers), the extended doesn't have the different coloured subtitles, which I thought was the biggest change and some of the inner monologue voiceover near the beginning is missing. I couldn't really pinpoint specific added SCENES, more added/extended SHOTS and it's weird but I felt the original cut seemed longer. Probably because the 2nd time round I knew the story and what scenes were coming next. I do however recommend seeing the regular version and watching the DC out of curiosity. I do also think the pacing was better in the DC but again, that might be down to the fact I already knew the film.
The film though, holy cow, by far the best film I've seen so far this year. Was a bit long in the middle but apart from that it's nigh on perfect.

I hope these aren't region locked. I don't want to settle for the American release or the Canadian one either.

I'm assuming the UK release will be region locked. That's why I'm waiting to see what the Korean release will look like. I'm not sure why the Korean BD is taking so long--hopefully, something special is in the works.

Possible bad news on the subtitles.

The theatrical release was reviewed on The Film Review (BBC News channel) and they showed a clip.

All white subs.

Curious, why does the colour of the subs matter? I never thought much of it either way.

Non-asian film fans or korean/japanese cinema newbs who haven't gotten used to how different the languages sound need the coloured subs to pick up on Japanese/Korean back-and-forth.

Gents, do you mean the UK theatrical release showing at the moment has white & yellow subs?

If that's the case I presume it's one colour for Japanese and one for Korean, which is exactly what we want.

Please confirm. Many thanks.

Sorry, but the version of the extended cut I caught at Cineworld only had white subs through the whole film. Can't imagine that it would have made a vast difference, since the characters only speak Korean outside of the Uncle's house.

Either way, the best film I've seen in a while and my preorder was in as soon as I came out of the cinema.

Yeah, the Theatrical version has the white/yellow subs, the Extended/Directors cut has all white subs.

HMV has this listed at £15.99 for the special edition ... i've spoken to amazon and they've agreed to look into the possibility of lowering their price asap in order to avoid a loss of orders - it's currently about £8 more expensive at amazon.

Man, I wish the UK wouldn't slap those ugly "18 classification" logos on the front of their blu-rays. Just keep 'em on the back like they do with ratings here in the US.

The press release also confirmed that both extended and theatrical cut would have alt. coloured subs. I know they're not always correct but hopefully it's truthful.
