It's not that Daniel Day-Lewis is underused, he is just very selective as to which roles he accepts. When he does take a role, he's notorious for the lengths he goes in preparation for the role (e.g. spending 8 weeks in a cerebral palsy clinic to prepare for My Left Foot, boxing training for a year & a half for The Boxer).

He's also a pretty extreme method actor and usually stays "in character" during the entire shoot.

IMO he's the best actor working these days.

If only Al Pacino would be, as well.

This is hardly the majority opinion but while I didn't love the movie overall I not only thought she was very good, I actually thought she was one of the better things about it.

But of course there's an ever so slight chance your mileage will vary.

Well, I certainly don't want to start writing anybody's obit or anything but if I could only have one of the things he's currently working on I think I'd lean more toward The Devil in the White City.

This sounds very interesting as does The Irishman but Devil is a great story and digital tools keep getting better and better every year. Couple that with his ability to paint gritty cityscapes and the dual nature of the book could really come across on-screen.

The only trick will be figuring a way to get The Stones into the soundtrack

As I said, I can't stand her in any role. I recall numerous people telling me she was the best thing about The Counselor, yet she gave me a headache every time she was on screen with that phony performance. I think I've come to the point that my dislike for her is so deep rooted in my head, that I don't think I can any longer judge her objectively.

I wasn't sure what the baseball bat "Smile" meant but if it was because you thought I was speaking negatively about him you didn't read my post before that. I think he's an incredible actor. Perhaps I just haven't known about some of the other films he's been in. I completely forgot about The Boxer which I need to see along with In the Name of the Father which I still haven't seen.

His performance in There will be blood is one of the best performances I've ever seen and from what I did see in Gangs of New York he was excellent in that as well.

I flat out loved The Counselor especially the extended cut and I'm not a fan of Diaz either at all but I did think she was great in The Counselor.

Yeah both De Niro and Pacino. I don't know what the hell happened with those two. They were film icons and their films were literally an event. Once the 2000's hit their script choices took a dump or they got really bad newer agents. De Niro still does a good film once in a great while but the last good film I remember Pacino in was Any Given Sunday. I haven't seen much of his films since though so I could be missing others after Any Given Sunday that I need to see.

I'd throw in Meryl Streep in there, as well. Granted, it's nowhere near as bad as her late 80s/early 90s work nor what De Niro and Pacino are doing but Streep mostly made great and interesting films as well. Since the 2000s, none of her work has been inspired, despite the numerous Oscar noms. I mean, Lions for Lambs, Rendition, Mamma Mia, and Into the Woods are nowhere near what she's accomplished with Kramer vs Kramer or especially Sophie's Choice. And her next film? An unnecessary Mary Poppins sequel.

He has been in a lot of crap, but I know he still had a lot of fun making that crap, so I can't exactly fault him for that.

Unless it's like Gravity or The Martian, you can count out sci-fi. Scorsese has never made a picture that deviates from realism. Only times he dwells in these moments are in hallucinations or dreams.

The Hours, Doubt, August : Osage County, The Iron Lady, Manchurian Candidate, ... She's still giving one great performance after the other in great movies.

Since Al Pacino was brought up, what did you guys think of Danny Collins? I wish I had picked it up on Blu Ray.

In your opinion. The Hours and Doubt are great but the rest are mediocre to me.
