Saw The Mummy in 3D yesterday; easily the WORST film I have seen so far in 2017. Nothing worked: the plot made no sense (surprising since it's been filmed successfully so many times already), there was zero chemistry between the two leads, the set action pieces looked like set action pieces from the Mission Impossible films (and looked cheap) and the 3D effect was non-existent. Much has been made - negatively - of Russell Crowe's "English accent", but I think that was the least of the film's problems ... If Universal want to make a big thing of their "Dark Universe", they'll have to pull out all the stops for the next film (which, bizarrely, appears to be the sequel to "Frankenstein"??) ...

Yes, this was a total and complete mess. Complete agreement with you.

This 2017 version of The Mummy is the first entry in the Dark Universe franchise, which will update the iconic Universal Monsters films for our present age. These new movies will center around the laboratory of Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe), who runs a secret organization that captures, contains, or destroys monsters, supernatural threats, and evil entities around the world. In this first film, Tom Cruise plays Nick Morton, a soldier of fortune who inadvertently discovers the tomb of Ahmanet, a beautiful Egyptian princess who was entombed alive after selling her soul to a god of darkness and murdering her family. Princess Ahmanet, who is played by Sofia Boutella, is still an unpleasant sort when she awakens from her centuries of imprisonment after a chaotic series of events, and she wastes no time acting on her anger by raising the dead, unleashing horrible dust storms, and possessing the soul of Morton, who must protect his lovely romantic interest, played by Annabelle Wallis, from the mummy's wrath.

Sadly, this new film lacks the eerily restrained brilliance of the 1932 Universal version of The Mummy that starred Boris Karloff, it lacks the sinister visceral appeal of the 1959 Hammer Studios version that starred Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, and it even lacks the joyously slapstick adventure of the 1999 version that starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. What it does have, in excess, is a series of "Mummy Impossible" scenes with Tom Cruise surviving gunfights, plane crashes, car chases, and femme fatales (a mummified femme fatale, anyway). I have always been fascinated with the idea of mummy curses since I was a child, and this seems like a difficult concept to screw up in a film, but Universal Studios fails to draw us into the fold by way of any semblance of a suspense buildup, and, instead, they inundate us with a barrage of computer effects action sequences that merely had me looking at my watch and wondering where I would go for dinner after the movie was over.

This new reboot of The Mummy has the highest budget and the most elaborate visual effects of all of the mummy films in cinema history, but it is also the most boring one. I can't help thinking that there's a lesson here somewhere.

On the plus side, The Mummy is not a total loss, and it does have its enjoyable aspects. For starters, I think that Sofia Boutella's mummy is a lot easier on the eyes than Boris Karloff's mummy or Christopher Lee's mummy, so I simply enjoyed looking at her for the duration of the film. Tom Cruise is still a charismatic and fun actor to watch after all of these years, and he excels yet again in another one of his trademark roles as a cocky and careless character who gradually learns about responsibility and sacrifice over the course of the story. Most importantly, though, I now understand and appreciate where Universal Studios plans to take us for these Dark Universe stories, and I think that the final minutes of this film do a fantastic job of setting the tone for what is to come. My pulse quickened and my eyes lit up when Tom Cruise's Morton walked through Dr. Jekyll's laboratory, and the camera revealed a split-second shot of a glass-encased claw that resembled that of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The Dark Universe franchise will need to step up its game for any subsequent films, but I really hope that it has a chance to do so.
Very well-worded review. Thanks. (And from a fellow Georgian, no less ...)

Just saw it tonight, and it was not nearly as bad as everyone is crying about it being. Can't wait to pick it up on Blu/4K and check it out again.

Saw this today and enjoyed it. Will definitely get the UHD at some point, probably also the Target Steelbook unless the artwork is bad.

This must've been a popular showing with men for Fathers Day because I saw this today, also. I'm not sure why there was so much hate for this movie, but I actually enjoyed it. Some of the acting needed some work, and there were some scenes that I felt were a bit dumb or out of place, but overall, I enjoyed this film. It wasn't great, but it was definitely good enough to get me excited for Universal Studios' Dark Universe.

I was finally able to see this today too. The theater was packed, so I agree that it must have been a popular Father's Day choice.

I thought the movie was fine for a summer action pic and not as bad as it was made out to be. One thing, I thought it had too much groan-inducing humor for the horror film they purportedly wanted to make. I'll probably pick up the blu-ray, but will probably wait for Black Friday.

The only time the humor kinda annoyed me was when
[Show spoiler]dead Jake Johnson kept tryna be funny. It just didn't work with the whole zombie look.

That was one of the things that bothered me the most, I also thought his acting was very bland.

Looks like the 3D release will have to be imported....

I feel obligated to purchase EVERY 3D Blu-ray release but I'm on the fence with this release for the first time. This was EASILY and BY A LONG SHOT the worst movie of the summer, the worst Tom Cruise movie and the worst of the Mummy franchise. The 3D was mild at best and the movie was not funny, entertaining or scary. It brought nothing new to this story or to the genre and the special f/x couldn't save it because even they weren't great or remarkable.

Ironically, I'm ONLY tempted to purchase it because it is a 3D blu-ray release and I feel the need to support the cause. I have no interest in seeing this again otherwise and can't imagine 4K would add much because so much of the movie is dark and devoid of colour. I pre-ordered the 3D version from Amazon UK but may cancel it.

I thought I would point out the Mummy film with the largest budget was The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor with a $145 million budget. This one had a $125 million budget which in present times is relatively smaller then even the budget of the Mummy Returns ($98 million in 2002).

$125 million is about as cheap as blockbusters get in the present.

If you don't like the film you shouldn't pick up the 3d blu-ray, or any other version. If you want to support 3d blu-ray there are plenty of other films i'm sure you don't have and could pick up insteed.
