I've read that the answer is: "it's the version I grew up with."

Aside from some hiccups here and there (and taking way too long to initially release them), Disney has actually done pretty well by most of these films. The dubs are high-quality, and most of the films give you both English and Japanese credits, depending on which language is selected (Nausicaa excepted, I think). They've also given them higher visibility in the US than they might have had otherwise (though maybe not as high as they could have).
As others have stated, the main issue with the Disney releases are the subtitles on Castle, Kiki, and Mononoke. From an A/V standpoint, most of them are great. |

Awesome! Good thing I've been holding off buying Mononoke and Spirited.
I wonder if the extras will be ported over from the previous releases? I don't know if Disney produced any of the new ones exclusively, and they're notoriously stingy about letting other studios have their extras. Hmm... |

As far as the Streamline/Troma dub of Totoro goes, it was fine for its time and there are people who are fond of it. But Disney's dub of it is certainly acceptable. Furthermore, the Streamline/Tokuma dubs weren't always good. Kiki compared favorably to its Disney counterpart, but Laputa and Porco Rosso -- the Disney dubs of these two movies are far superior; the previous non-Disney ones stink. The less said about "Warriors", the better. |

I'd like to have the British dub for Arrietty with Saoirse Ronan, Tom Holland, and Olivia Coleman. It's a shame we didn't get it before, but now that they're all more well known here maybe it's possible now. |

Now the one with Phil Hartman's adlibs... that WAS released on video for a time, and it WAS ported to DVD in 2003. Likewise with Castle in the Sky with the new score (albeit its first release in America on any domestic format WAS on the 2003 DVD/VHS release). Streamline DID distribute a previous dub of Castle in the Sky breifly for a time, but that version was done quite badly, even if it WAS by traditional voiceovers as opposed to the bigger names Disney secured for their dub (Mark Hamill, Van der Beek, Cloris Leachman, etc.). Just to give you an idea, here's a sample of how bad the older dub is compared to the Disney one. https://vimeo.com/30591046 I'm not comparing either dub to the Japanese version because I am of the opinion that the dubs should stand on their own merits, but there's an obvious difference in terms of quality between the laughable, deadpan delivery of the late Jeff Winkless in the Tokuma dub versus Mark's more gloriously ruthless performance. Yes, Pazu and Sheeta sound a bit younger, but even their actresses were badly directed. I'm not saying the Disney leads were better cast -- James and Anna aren't ideal choices for these two -- but there's much more life to their performances than their shrill, shrieky, and often robotic JAL counterparts. I'm curious what the audio will be since Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle, and I think another one had 6.1 surround sound mixes that were not encoded as such by Disney - the only one getting the full treatment being 'Tales from Earthsea'
