Would've been nice to include both cuts, but there you go.
What did you think of he picture quality? I know Studio Canal can be hit and miss!

Oh, very good as far as I could tell. Dunno if they got David M for this disc but it's still pretty competently done. In fact I don't reckon they did get him as the audio on the first interview extra sounded very muffled on my telly (mixed badly perhaps?).

A solid alternative to the Criterion for anyone else locked to Region B, and probably cheaper too (2 for £25 at HMV right now).

I didn't really like this film. The plot is confusing and rather simple, the acting is a bit "meh" and it's unbelievably boring. I was on the verge of falling asleep by the halfway mark. I do love crime films, but this one was just extremely boring.

For the record, I didn't like Fargo or O Brother Where Art Thou? either.

From the 2/25 deal. Always loved this film and I dont think much of Cohen outside of Fargo and No Country. Brilliant film, near perfect transfer compared to the dvd and amazing cover art.

Excellent presentation and probably just the right amount of extras for me. I did initially wonder whether I would want the bigger package from Criterion but having sat through all the interviews, over an hour from various heads about the film is plenty and covers lots of ground. I think that 70 min conversation on the Criterion would be overkill and tbh I felt the only interview that dragged a little was the McDormand one.

Respectfully, I think you are 1000% wrong on this. The Coen/Sonnenfeld piece is one of the best, if not the best, special features I've ever seen. It is technical but incredibly entertaining.

Yes, I probably should have added for “for me” as I genuinely prefer more anecdotal and backstory to technical and scholarly.

Understand, but I should say it is full of those too. It really is the gold standard that I hold special features to, but I do understand that, do to the expense, importing a disc for a special feature is not really worth it.

Assuming the German release is the same disc as the UK, it doesn't look like his work

The Audio options are different to the UK disc which only has English 5.1 and stereo so it’s a different disc but who knows about the video encode. It certainly looks impressive enough in motion.

Correct, but the video bitrates are the same between the two releases (BD.com rounds up or down the bitrate figure. Both UK and DE releases have a 26.997Mbps video bitrate). From looking at the screen caps, the StudioCanal release is better in some scenes and the Criterion in others. Both use the same master which is the important thing and both look fantastic. It would be very hard to see any issues in motion at viewing distance.

I was under the impression that StudioCanal was in the habit of preparing one disc for their various territories. So the difference in audio options is interesting.

I agree Tech-UK, you most likely wouldn't see the issue in the screencap I linked to in motion, but I believe that encode is not as good as DavidM's work and so it almost certainly wasn't done by him. That is all I was trying to illustrate. (Heck, the only reason I was at caps-a-holic was to look at the caps of Le samouri and I happened to notice that they had added Blood Simple.)

Fopp had the cheek to sell this for £15, which is far too much for an 80s catalogue title IMO. That's not even the worst of it. They want a full £35 for the 3-disc set of Apocalypse Now, which Amazon sell for £25 new and can be picked up for a tenner from a third-part seller.

£15 is the standard price for a new release or restored classic from Studio Canal, so I don’t see why Fopp is cheeky selling it for £15.

I just think it's a bit too much. Or maybe I think it should be sold cheap because I didn't like it. I just feel that charging the same price as a brand new release is a bit greedy. No wonder they haven't got rid of all of these Apocalypse Now boxsets.

You do realise Fopp don’t set the prices. If you wanted it cheap, you could have waited on it to drop in price.

First time it's been released in the UK on Blu Ray so it's £15 @ Fopp, HMV, Amazon and everywhere else. It maybe in the 2 for £25 in some stores but it is what it is. Pay £15 for the UK version, or the best part of £30 to import the US Criterion...

It's 2 for £25 at HMV.com (or in-store if you prefer) and I recommend it to anyone who calls themselves a fan of the Coen Brothers, or neo-noirs/southern Gothic/80's thrillers in general. Get Sorcerer too whilst you're at it, another must-see thriller (though from the decade before; it's OOS right now, still waiting for my order to dispatch).

OOS? There were quite a few copies in Fopp. There's one advantage to not having everything delivered by Amazon.
