I like how Spielberg chose (and thankfully Bruce forced his hand) to build up to the shark reveal in Jaws rather than have the monster front and center. I also even enjoy the original The Haunting as it plays on your fears without showing you much of anything.

I'll rent it first.
I also prefer not having everything out in the open on screen all of the time. Just a noise, a shadow or a glimpse works much better than seeing something in all its glory.

That's why I prefer the first Conjuring movie over the sequel. I still like it but they went overboard with the whole Crooked Man and Nun thing, showing them way too often and way too much of them which for me made it a whole lot less scarier. I sincerely hope the third movie will be more like the first one regarding that aspect...

Just got back from seeing this. It's great. Think The Goonies meets A Nightmare On Elm Street and you'll be pretty close to the tone of this movie. A massive improvement over the original. I really, really enjoyed this and I can't wait to see it again. Definitely a day 1 buy on UHD, it has the potential to be a great looking disc.

Considering how big the film looks set to be at the Box Office, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to bring it out a week or two earlier than that to fully take advantage of the Christmas market.

The earliest they can do it because of the 90-day window (with a few days added because new home video releases are on Tuesdays) is Tuesday, November 28th.

[EDIT] Oops, that's actually Tuesday, December 12th. Mistakenly counted three months/12 weeks, not 90 days. Like an idiot.

the Atmos mix is insanely good, and for a 2K DCP - it looked fantastic.

The EARLIEST they can release it is the 12th; one week earlier.

Some of us have kids and unfortunately don't have babysitters so we can go to the movies. But I'd rather watch a movie like this at home, instead of hearing all the high schoolers scream at every scene.

I realize that, I was just being facetious since it's opening day and I feel like I sometimes see those types of posts opening weekend if not the 2nd weekend.

I saw this tonight in Dolby Cinema.

Second best looking film I seen in this format after only 'Alien: Covenant.'

And the film itself, as far as commercial, 'mainstream' horror goes, is one of the best of its genre in recent years. Certainly better than anything from the Conjuring-verse--and since the majority of horror films seeing releases nowadays generally come from more independent studios, it's hard to really measure this up with titles like 'The Witch' or 'It Comes at Night.'

A very solid film regardless of genre, though. Only thing that didn't really hit with me was
[Show spoiler]the final fight with Pennywise. Richie throwing in the humor before attacking Pennywise, felt like something out of a Marvel film. It really just didn't seem to fit considering how well-placed the 'horror elements' were in this film.

The Leper sequence ruled. Javier Botet's use of his body for roles like these, just continue to terrify film by film.

[Show spoiler]Georgie's arm getting ripped off. Jesus. Not only was it brutal to actually see it, but I felt so bad for the little dude trying to crawl away, only for Pennywise to reach out and drag him into the gutter. Absolute mad man!

The best part of this film was the amount of heart it had. The chemistry of the kids was off the charts.

Honestly, it's going to be hard for Part II to match this. Mainly because the kids did such a fantastic job, so there's this inherent innocence to them, coupled with the fact that due to their youth, you just sort of automatically sympathize with them.

I don't doubt the talents of Andy Muschietti one iota--but it just feels like Part II will underwhelm regardless of who's cast for the adult roles, primarily because it's one of the weaker aspects of the source material itself. Curious to see what liberties they'll take with that in the sequel, for the sake of making a hopefully great film.

what did you think of the soundmix - wasn't it a kick in the head

Saw this last night after work and enjoyed it quite a bit. There's definitely room for some really effective use of HDR for a UHD release and actually seeing it with black levels that don't look like how the kid explained the sewer water in the film will be nice as well.

The Leper sequence was absolutely mortifying due to how good the sound mixing was.

Sound wise, this, and 'Baby Driver', have to be my favorite Dolby Atmos experience so far.

And even with this film only having a 2K DCP, the Dolby Vision was very nicely implemented with this film. Especially in enclosed locations where there wasn't a lot of light. When the one bully, whose name I forget atm (he was one of Bowers' buddies) went into the sewers to chase the Losers Club, there was hardly any light at all, but you could make out so much interior textures due to the HDR experience.

If any of you plan on seeing this in theatres, Dolby Cinema is absolutely the way to go for this film.
