The problem is that Hollywood is full of Type-A, "alpha male" personalities. To them, those "little films" are like bunts or singles, and everybody just wants to hit the home run.

The transformers films have been losing popularity in most places for three entries now. The big thing that was hiding that was the Chinese box office boom, and the Chinese audience went crazy for it. Though even they saw around a 33% drop from the 4th to 5th film.

3 and 4 grossed over $1B, 4 being a slight step down from 3. People generally like those first three (or at least 1 and 3), and goodwill from those got people to give the 4th a chance. But that movie couldn't create enough goodwill to get people to see Last Knight. I'm looking forward to Bumblebee cuz I hope they use it as a way to course-correct the franchise, because these Wahlberg ones have been a significant step down from the Shia LaBeouf Transformers Original Trilogy (trademark pending lol).

Minus the Chinese box office and you will see what I mean by dwindling interest elsewhere.

Agree with you there. TF 4 and the trailers for 5 were the reason din't go to theater for 5.

Think some of the remakes that are done could be titled something else. Some of the remakes today barely resemble the original. Use some plot points from an original but change it enough and rename it. After all are there any original story line basis left.

Yeah but the whole point of remakes is to cash in on the IP. Few remakes are actually good enough to jusify their existence; most are meh or downright awful.

To be fair, you should have included the rest of the 2010s as well. No doubt 2017 wasn't the best year for Paramount but I'm sure they will get back on their feet in some time.

2010:

1 Warner Bros. 18.0% $1,923.9 36 27
2 Paramount 16.0% $1,713.8 18 14
3 20th Century Fox 13.9% $1,482.2 20 17
4 Buena Vista 13.6% $1,456.4 17 14
5 Sony / Columbia 12.0% $1,282.9 23 18

2011:

1 Paramount 19.2% $1,957.1 21 15
2 Warner Bros. 17.9% $1,826.2 38 26
3 Sony / Columbia 12.5% $1,273.7 28 23
4 Buena Vista 12.2% $1,240.7 17 14
5 Universal 10.2% $1,040.6 17 15

You also have to remember that they lost some high profile Franchises to Disney. They lost The Marvel films when Disney bought Marvel and then they lost The Indiana Jones series to Disney again when they bought Lucasfilm so really the only franchises they have left are The Transformers films, The Star Trek films and Mission Impossible.

I left them out for a reason. I was talking about from 2012 and onwards. 2011 was the last year they were successful. As were the years before it.

But Paramount is still gonna get money from the new Indy films, so it’s not a complete loss, to be fair.

MI is their only franchise that is still making a lot of money. ST and Transformers have dropped off a lot.

If they're crumbling, let 'em crumble. Nature, and capitalism, abhor a vacuum. Someone will sweep up the crumbs and carry on.

I actually think they have been taking more risks as of late. Silence and mother! are not money makers. Either they are giving directors money and saying "make something", or from a money making point of view, they don't know what to do.

An obvious direction to go is to make horror films. They're cheap and usually always make their money back.

That’s probably the only positive I’ll give to the studio. Then again, WB has been doing the same for years and they’re doing much better.
