I’m a sucker for man and dog stories so it sucks that if I end up loving this it will most likely never see a physical release.

Streaming services are great but they are also one of the worst things to happen to physical media collectors. So many great movies just being held prisoner on various streaming services.

Mad Max meets I Am Legend meets Cast Away.

What's not to like.

That is the major point of the services in terms of making profit. If you want access you need to make “low monthly payments” for the rest of your life.

Which is ridiculous - Instead of buying the movie for less than $25 I have to spend over $100 a year to keep the service.

For $25 you get 1 movie. $100 - 4 movies. $100/year you get access to thousands of movies and TV shows with monthly additions.

Call it "The Entertainment Expense." Not much different than your Internet monthly payment expense which is a lot higher. You are going to pay for that the rest of your life right?

Yeah but for me it has more to do with the fact that for movies I love I want to own a tangible copy that I can hold in my hand and put on the shelf with my other movies and know that it’s mine.

I’m sure my fellow physical media collectors share that same sentiment.

I'm sure they do. But the reality is that there are many more casual movie viewers who just want to watch a movie a single time.

And for those who don't mind ads, there are a number of free streaming services like Tubi, Roku, Filmrise, Pluto-TV and others that offer movies and TV shows with a zero monthly expense.

But if you don’t want all those movies, then they aren’t of any use to you.

You are paying for something you don’t want, need or use. That is a big disadvantage of streaming: most of your subscription expense does you no good.

Yes, I will be paying for internet for the rest of my life. But aside from entertainment streaming I also use the internet for email, banking, investing, bill paying, booking airfare, booking hotels, finding recipes, researching products and services and more.

The thing to realize is that every time you spend money you lose the opportunity to invest it.

For example, someone once posted online when I was commenting about Adobe, that the $10 a month was only $6000 over 50 years.

That is wrong. One figure I saw said the stock market has given an average return over the last 70 years of 9.5%.

That means that $10/month costs you $117K.

If you get the Disney package, Netflix, Peacock, Paramount Plus, HBOMax in their best packages plus Amazon Prime (which encourages you to shop more) that is about $853 a year.

That costs you $830K over 50 years at the above rate of return. Even at a 3% rate of return that is $96K.

BTW here is the future value calculator I used.

But if they don’t have the programming you want, those free services are of no use.

So . . . Tom Hanks, a dog and a robot. Should be a BO smash.

Tom Hanks sounds exhausted in every line of that trailer. Maybe covid did a bigger number on him than we thought.

It was filmed before that.

Going to the second store without diapers does you no good because you really want diapers.

A perfect example of a Strawman Argument!
