You know, the PS3 had to play a role in this. If it did not, then we all know that would mean people were buying multiple copies of each movie for only one standalone. Kudos to Sony on the PS3, again!

There is one other reason

Mainly a lot of people who wanted to make the HD jump were waiting for one format to win. The issue with that is they stopped buying DVDs know they would buy on the wining HD format. The overall Q4 was underperforming based on the box office of the titles released. Overall DVD was down almost 5% for the year. A LOT of cash was left on the table due to the format war.

When you are talking about a industry that generates $16 Billion in profit a 5% decline is a lot of money
