Hmm, maybe I am dating myself but there was a time that when a "raunchy" comedy came out on video, in order to help sell the video release, they would have an unrated version.
"Scenes we weren't allowed to show in theaters".
Give people who already saw it a reason to buy it.
I guess that trend ended.

Especially if the code included in the bluray only works on iTunes. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.
It's because there is a VUDU redemption through Walmart InstaWatch. If you purchase the bluray from Walmart, it comes with VUDU InstaWatch redemption which is the only way to get it on VUDU other than buying it directly. Even though there isn't a code that will redeem the movie, there is a redeem button indicating that there is an InstaWatch redemption eligibility. This is what I was told from ppl who work with VUDU.

Thank you, I completely forgot about InstaWatch and Walmart lol. So weird that since the first film came out on bluray with redemption code that worked on VUDU and the sequel doesn't redeem on VUDU. I guess I have to figure all of this out now in terms of Movies Anywhere and what studios are shifting their titles. Obnoxious, but we'll figure it out haha. Thanks again.

You're welcome! Yeah, I have the first one (Bad Moms) and that one came with both UV and iTunes redemption. People mention here that it has something to do with STX Pictures being the distributor as the reason for this mishap, but even the first Bad Moms was also distributed by STX. Perhaps there was something recent regarding digital release that made these changes. Here are all the films distributed by STX:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STX_Entertainment

All of them starting with The Gift had both UV and iTunes redemption, with exception to Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets since that was partnered with Lionsgate (that was UV only). Considering The Foreigner didn't even have a digital copy code, guess all the movies being released from STX will have some sort of limitation. Most likely Molly's Game and Den of Thieves will have this issue where the digital copy will only redeem through iTunes. It's very difficult to keep up with digital redemption these day, and I'm thankful of people here sharing their knowledge to mitigate confusions lol

This is terrible. I didn’t even know this happened anymore. When was the last release that was iTunes*Only? Why would they even do that? I can’t believe I will have to pay full price for this and wasted my code because I can’t use iTunes.

Before UV took off, I remember digital copies being started out with iTunes only in SD format with the requirement of using the physical digital copy disc to redeem. There have been few instances with Universal Studios that were UV only (Steve Jobs come to mind), but this may be the first time where it's iTunes only. If you're wanting it for VUDU, I'd recommend purchasing the blu-ray from Walmart and using the Walmart Savings Catcher App to redeem the movie through InstaWatch.

I just spoke with SFX and a nice lady in distribution told me I was the 2nd call and she showed genuine concern for the problem, understood exactly Why it’s a bad thing, knew they released the first Bad Mom’s film, knew Molly’s game was coming soon and might cause the same problem, and she told me they are looking into it and that she would call me back.

Since they’re aware, others should probably not flood them with calls since they were very nice and professional.

However if they are really choosing to force us into itunes only, and there is no resolution, I would suggest contacting them and letting them know how we feel about this, as we are the ones buying their products.

Update:

SFX is an awesome company to deal with. A lady in charge of all
Of this called me from NYC to apologize.

She said they are working on a deal with MA and think it’s possible before Molly’s Game is released.

I was told that MA are the ones preventing a deal right now because they are currently only dealing with large studios and consider this basically an indie studio despite the Universal/Lionsgate involvement (which even confuses me).

When a deal is struck, A Bad Mom’s Christmas should port over. I was told if people want a deal to happen faster to email MA and let them know you want titles like A Bad Mom’s Christmas and Molly’s Game to not be limited to iTunes. I’m sending them an email tonight and encourage others to do so as well.

For now, it’s a waiting game but SFX said they absolutely feel terrible that only iTunes would deal with them and are very much wanting a licensing deal with MA and are working diligently to get one. Hopefully some of us can help them out but nothing anytime soon can be done about A Bad Mom’s Christmas. Hopefully it goes down to $9.99 soon and I’ll begrudgingly buy it if there’s no deal yet.

That sounds fantastic.

Although, minor quibble, it is STX Films.

Anywho, as for the confusion...

Prior to the Foreigner and Valerian and City of Planets: Universal has physical and digital distribution rights to STX Films.

Valerian, Renegades, and one other unnamed upcoming film are under a EuropaCorp deal thus these are with Lionsgate both physically and digitally. Due to EuropaCorp's deal with Lionsgate.

Starting with The Foreigner, the distribution is split with Universal having physical distribution and STX Films doing digital distribution themselves.

So, if Movies Anywhere does not want to sign deals with independent or smaller studios then that leaves Ultraviolet as a possibility, which was not mentioned. The other issue with MA's choice is that it will leave a lot of studios out of the lurch especially Magnolia/Magnet pictures.

I wound up buying the Target exclusive with the $5 e-giftcard. The site was down for awhile, but just worked and I redeemed the code with no problem. Other than reading the website on the back of the sticker, which was kind of small. In case anyone else had trouble with it, then here's the link: https://www.activaterewards.com/badmomschristmas/

In an interesting move from Universal, this disc is region A locked (likely due to STX). Interestingly, the first movie (also STX under Universal) is region-free.

Hello,

This was not distributed by Universal Pictures. Hence, unfortunately, we won’t be able to assist you with this issue. Please contact STX studio for further assistance with this. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Thank you.

Is there any way to contact STX Entertainment?

Unfortunately no movement by STX on the issue of Molly's Game and A Bad Moms Christmas. Neither is UV or MA compatible. Family library sharing is a big deal for me so at this point won't buy either movie on disc.

Saw this last night - amazes me just how good a picture a regular bluray can have. It looked spectacular. So clean, sharp and great colours.

The march towards 4k has finally gotten us 1080p detail in most movies that come out!

My GF watched this a couple months ago and absolutely hated it, and she's very easily entertained by comedies.

I'm gonna have to give it a go myself though to form my own opinion. According to the review on this site, it looks like a quality disc in regards to both visual and audio quality, so if I like the movie I'd have no problem buying it.

I really enjoyed the original Bad Moms film.
