I served 24 years in the military (recently retired) and the funny thing is...military films just aren't my thing. I love a few, like Saving Private Ryan and Platoon. Lone Survivor was great as well, but for the most part I don't get overly excited to watch them. I don't know if it's just because it was my life for so long, but I tend to steer toward more fantasy based genres.

I was in the Navy so seeing how TV and films portray the modern Navy gives me a bit of a giggle.

Watching the WW2 Navy films make me proud to have served a branch with such a rich tradition.

Watched "We Were Soldiers" last night (had the house to myself).

Damn that one is a brutal one.

Going to be making the final decision on our choice after my dinner at Texas de Brazil (a Brazilian steakhouse).

Cheers again everyone for all the awesome input and for those who did serve, enjoy this day as much as I have.

Naval comedies too? I was thinking about one the other day called Mister Roberts with Henry Fonda and James Cagney.

Not too many military comedies these days.

I'm before your time, but also served with the Rangers. Also served with a mechanized unit when Desert Shield/Storm kicked off. Always pisses me off that they didn't let us finish our job back then. Like you, I have a hard time with Saving Private Ryan. I still remember my girlfriend (Now wife) trying to get me to watch that opening sequence, but the scars were still fresh. Enjoyed BoB, but never finished the series. Mister Roberts is one of the best movies out there.

I actually picked this up at a Value Village on DVD. Shame it hasn't been giving the blu treatment. Lawrence of Arabia is also a nice one. I use to enjoy Bridge over the River Kwai until I watched a documentary with the original prisoners of that camp. Path of Glory is just a brilliant film. As is Sergeant York. Definitely a lot of great movies. We actually watched Bedknobs and Broomsticks yesterday, but not because of Veterans Day lol.
