I wish Tmnt 2 did better. I loved it and wanted a third. Sigh.

Never thought GI Joe would get to 3 installment while Ninja Turtles wouldn’t

I can see them turning things around by revamping the Transformers franchise and finding 2-3 other viable franchises to sink their teeth into.

The Aronofsky/Laurence thing just proves that people in the movies don’t matter as much as the movie simply being good does. I personally find Laurence pretty annoying and extremely overrated but whatever.

Tough deal for Paramount. Not very much good stuff lined up either.

It wasn't a good year for them, business-wise, but I applaud Paramount for taking risks with stuff like mother!, Suburbicon and Downsizing. The first is probably my favorite film of the year, and the other two look more interesting than most studio films released this year.

Now if only people paid to see films like these...

I will give them this: Paramount is one of only two major studios, the other being Warner Bros, that does release smaller indies and gives them a great deal of theaters. Usually, the rest leave the smaller films to their own indie label (Universal=Focus, Sony=Sony Pictures Classic, Fox=Fox Searchlight). And mother! was really risky, even WB wouldn’t take a chance with that. But Suburbicon was a massive misfire, I’m still in awe at how it failed at what it wanted to achieve. Downsizing was a bit risky but ended up being Alexander Payne’s first ever misfire in an otherwise consistently amazing career. Besides, with mother!, I have no doubt it will become a classic in the future, so it’s BO won’t matter and Paramount will be happy to have it in its slate.

Hmmm, I haven't seen Suburbicon yet (seeing it later this week), but the trailer looked really good, so I'm interested. Downsizing doesn't come out for a few months here in Portugal, but I think it looks interesting as well.

Maybe, they can make some cash, by digging into the vaults. Hi Def discs of King Kong 1976, Prophecy 1979, The War of the Worlds 1953, When Worlds Collide, Orca, Silver Bullet, The Dead Zone, Dragonslayer, Mommie Dearest, My Bloody Valentine (restored/remastered gore shots), Looking For Mr. Goodbar, would be a nice start.

They have tons of back catalog titles that need to be released. Coneheads is another big one. But sadly, they just don't seem to give a damn. It seems like most of the other companies like Lionsgate and Warner have caught on to the success of these smaller labels like SF and Arrow...etc and are starting to release more of their back catalog titles and are putting more care into their releases including unrated cuts and all that. I don't know why Paramount is being so damn stubborn about their titles...

Paramount had a bad year, it happens. Can't blame them for expecting bigger things out of Transformers and maybe xXx, but also movies like GITS and Baywatch were head-scratchers to begin with. And unfortunately it doesn't look like they have any shot at the awards race because they hitched their wagon to the suddenly-unable-to-make-a-good-movie Matt Damon (Suburbicon and Downsizing). Mother! was a legitimately good movie that was impossible to market properly.

They'll bounce back in 2018. Bumblebee should be a badly needed reset for Transformers and frankly all the news about that project has been positive IMHO, from director to cast to 1980s setting. MI6 will do great. God Particle should do fine. Annihilation will be... interesting, but like Poya said earlier, Paramount deserves credit for taking chances on original content from exciting filmmakers. Have read lots of good hype for Overlord. Even Death Wish might do OK just by cashing in on the original's name recognition. So I wouldn't sweat it too much. 2017 was (hopefully) just a bump in the road.

But if 2018 ends up being another similarly bad year, there'll need to be some big shake-ups over there.

Looks like Paramount has had a lackluster year but it's a total biggie. Studios usually have dry spells every now and then. It's not like they've made stupid decisions. I mean they rolled the dice with movies like mother! and Downsizing and I tip my hat to them for that.
Their 2018 slate is 50/50 to me. If M:I-6 remains as good as the last few entries before, it'll be just fine so will God Particle, if it manages to surprise like 10 Cloverfield Lane. Quiet Place, Action Park and Overlord are the wild cards. They could have the potential to be hits while Annihilation is questionable at best.
Sherlock Gnomes and Bumblebee are the two most likely to suck. I had no idea Gnomeo & Juliet made enough to even warrant a sequel. As for Bumblebee, it's just a Iron Giant ripoff and a change of pace won't change the fact that it's another Transformers movie that's really isn't needed.

I'm circling 11/2/18 on my calendar. "Untitled Paramount Event Film" sounds fantastic! That cast! That trailer! Can't wait!

It wasn't just this year, they had a terrible year last year also.

Ben-Hur
Zoolander 2
Allied
13 Hrs
Jack Reacher 2
TMNT 2

Star Trek did ok but underperformed domestically.

Their exposure on Ben-Hur was very limited IIRC and they at least had some players in the awards race (Fences, off the top of my head). But yeah, point taken; their 2016 wasn't too hot either.
