Yep, and they are extremely violent in order to get the point across.

But only a psychopath would leave either film thinking how cool the violent scenes were. Just as someone earlier mentioned Straw Dogs and The Last House on the Left -- same basic thing.

That's why the microwave scene in the LHOTL remake is really dumb. It kinda betrays the overall theme of the original film in favor for some Saw-era horror show silliness just to give the audience something to cheer over.

The remake bored me shitless. The original is one of my favourite horror films, but with the remake, it felt like they'd stripped away everything that made it interesting.

It would've been really cool to have see them do something with the bumbling cops, but of course they didn't have the balls to even attempt that subplot.

I would say that Andy Warhol's Empire is non-violent, but, in truth, it starkly depicts the savage violence inflicted by the passing of time and gradual corrosion.

No-one mentioned Death Wish yet? It's pretty violent but its message is speaking against violence and taking matters into one's own hands.

agreed... that's actually the first move that came to mind when I saw this thread...

I would add UNFORGIVEN for having an anti-violence message...

Come to think of it, I don't think Wayne's World has any violence in it at all.

Garth attacks that guy in the club with his homemade taser.

a handful that come immediately to mind because I've seen them recently

Juno
The Aviator
The Sessions
Paterson
Short Term 12
August: Osage County
The Joy Luck Club
The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill but Came Down a Mountain

I mean, that's just a quick eclectic set of titles as I think of them. (Recommended one and all btw.) But there are literally so many out there to choose from.

oh and for the more action-oriented, disaster movies can be a good place to look too. Stuff like Dante's Peak, The Impossible etc.
Joy Luck Club is a good movie, but I would argue that it has a fair bit of domestic violence. It's just a different kind of DV than what we have in the states.

Man, I thought this was going to be a thread about movies that are thematically about anti-violence despite being really violent.

The original Last House on the Left, in particular, came to mind.

What this thread ended up being about actually disappointed me considerably.
